Specification of Letters Patent. Patentedse pt zf), 191 1,
1 b all whom it may 0011,0crn:
Be it known that I, HA RY B. BALL, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garb-agdRecep tacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same. i
The object of this invention is to provide a garbage receptacle having simple and highly efficient means for so locking the cover that should the receptacle be upset the cover will not bedislodged or the contents discharged, the means for retaining the cover serving also as a guide therefor when being placed in position.
in the accompanying drawings Figure '1 is an elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a view of a locking ear blank.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the garbage receptacle, which is preferably of cylindrical formation. and 2 the cover therefor, which latter is provided with a comparatively deep circumferential flange 3 which is designed to extenddown over the receptacle on the outside thereof for a considerable distance. The lower edge of flange 8 is rounded or beaded at 4:, and this bead, at diametrically opposite points, is flattened as applied.
To opposite points on the receptacle, some distance below its upper end, and above its transverse center, are located ears 6 each of which is formed with a hook 7, the outer edge 8 of which is beveled at an angle of.
about i5 to the axis of the receptacle. 'ihese beveled portions 8 form guides for the edge of the cover and serve to direct the same inwardly toward the receptacle and downwardly into the spaces between the latter and the ends of the hooks. To position the cover the flattened portions 5 are brought in line with the ears in order to allow the edge of the cover to clear the ends of the hooks, and after the edge 4 is beneath both of the hooks the cover is axially turned a slight distance to bring unflattened portions of the rounded edge beneath the hooks, in locking the cover to the receptacle. Both ears are provided with eyes to accommodate the ends of the bale or handle -9.
It will be noted that the ears present flat thecover to contact withwhen being placed in position, and atthe sametlme to provide non-yielding hooks for retainingthe cover 111 place. Each of these ears is preferably formed from a single blank,as shown in Fig. 3, the blank being bent on the central line 10 and folded back upon itself, while the lateral portions are bent on the diagonal lines 12 to form flanges l3v which are rivetedto the receptacle. l
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that a cover may be readily locked by a slight axial movement after being placed in position, and that even iffhe receptacle be upset, as is frequently occasioned by prowlingdogs, it will remain locked and by reason of the depending flange of the cover no portion of the contents will be spilled. By forming the locking ears with the inclined portions 8 the proper positioning ofthe cover is insured. The cost of manufacturing a receptacle in accordance with my invention is comparatively slight.
I claim as my invention:
1. Asan article of manufacture, a garbage receptacle, a cover therefor having a circumferential flange designed to telescope the receptacle on its outside and extend downwardly thereover a considerable dis tance, the lower edge of said flange being.
beaded and having opposite reduced portions. and ears secured to the receptacle beneath the edge of the cover, the upper ends of said ears forming hooks which intersect the vertical plane of the bead of said flange to lock the cover to the receptacle, said ears extending upwardly from the receptacle to a point above the horizontal plane of the lower edge of said flange, forming spaces edges toward the cover and receptacle so as to present as little surface as possible for.
between said hooks and the receptacle to allow of the passage of the reduced portions of the cover flange.
2. As an article of manufacture, a garbage receptacle, a cover therefor having a circumferential flange designed to telescope the receptacle and extend downwardly thereover a considerable distance, the lower edge ofsaid flange being beaded and having opposite reduced portions, and hooks secured to the receptacle and extending outwardly therefrom forming spaces between their ends and the receptacle to allow of the passage of Intestimony whereof, I have signed this the reduced 'port1ons of the cover flange',;-said speclficatlon 1n the presence 01 two subhooks bemg composed of metal plates bent scrlbing wltnesses.
back upon themselves and presenting their HARRY B. BALL. edges toward the receptacle and also bent to e "Vitnesses:
form flanges Which are secured to the re- FRANCIS S. MAGUIRE,
