CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application filed September 13,1906. Serial No. 334,523.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. Room, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clark, in the county of Clark, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closets and more particularly to that class which include means for preventing the exodus of the gases from the excrementitious matter into the room wherein the closet is located.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will effectually prevent the exit of such gases and to provide a simple construction for this purpose.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closet embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the hinge for the cover.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes the sides of the closet, 6 the front thereof and 7 the seat.
The cover for the seat is indicated by the numeral 8 and is hingedly connected to the seat by means of a hinge 9. That leaf of the hinge which is secured to the cover 8 is provided with spaced pintle lugs 10 and has an integral tongue 1.1 extending rearwardly from the rear edge thereof, the upper end of the tongue being bent over to form a pintle lug 12 which is received between pintle lugs 13 formed on one end of a link 14, there being a pin 14 engaged through the said lugs.
A door 15 is pivoted at its rear end between the sides 5 of the closet at the lower edges thereof and secured to the door 15 at its rear edge and at its middle is a hinge leaf 16 having an upstanding tongue 1.7 on which is formed a single pintle lug 18. The said pintle lug 18 is received between similar lugs 19 formed on the lower end of the link 14 and a pin 20 is engaged through these lugs. The door 1.5 is adapted to close, at times, the receptacle 2]. in which the excrementitious matter is received and it will be readily understood from the foregoing that when the cover 8 is over the seat 7, the door 15 is over the top of the receptacle or pit in which the excrementitious matter is received, thus preventing exodus of obnoxious gases, and, that when the seat is raised, the door 15 will also be opened.
What is claimed isz- In adevice of the class described, the combination with a receptacle having an opening in its top, and a closure for the opening, of a plate secured to the closure, said plate being provided with spaced pintle lugs which are formed at its rear cage, said plate forming oneleaf oi a hinge, a hinge leaf secured upon the top rearwardly of the opening therein and provided with a pintle lug formed at the middle of its front edge, the said lug being received be tweenthe lugs upon the first mentioned hinge leaf, a tongue formed integral with the first mentioned leaf at its rear edge and extending between the pair of pintle lugs formed thereon, the said tongue being directed vertically and being bent to form a pintle lug, a door hinged for swinging movement to close the lower end of the receptacle, a plate secured to the upper face of the door at its rear edge, said plate being bent to extend upwardly and rearwurdly, and a link hinged at its upper end to the upper end of the tongue and at its lower end to the upper end of the last mentioned plate; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof,'I allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE E. ROUTH.
Witnesses:
C. G. Sunnwoon, FRANK LEWIS.
