Description

G. A. MAULLER.
GARBAGE BEGEPTAGLE.
APPLICATION rum) SEPT. 14, 1908.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE A. MAULLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARBAGE-REGEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE A. MAULLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garbage receptacles, and has for its object to provide a garbage container having means for draining off the liquid contents of the garbage, and means for readily opening and removing the contents from the receptacle.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical view of the same in mid section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the catch-member employed in my invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the flanges employed in fastening the receptacle in place.
As illustrated in the drawings, the garbage receptacle to which my invention is addressed is intended to be mounted upon a fence indicated by the numeral 5, and provided with the opening 6. The receptacle comprises a main body section 7, of the form illustrated in the drawings, provided at its top with the hinged cover 8 and having a bottom 9 inclined upwardly from its rear toward its front, and being provided near its rear edge with the drainage plug 10 covered by the screw-cap 11. The body section 7 has an opening at its front adapted to be closed by the door 12, which is hinged to the front edge of the bottom 9 by hinges 13. At its front the body section 7 is provided with the flanged plates lt which are secured to the sides of the body section and to the inner side of the fence 5 upon which the receptacle is to be mounted. Each of the flanged members 14: is provided with a slot 15; the door 12 is provided with outwardly projecting ears 16 to which the catchmember 17 is pivotally mounted by means of the bar 18. The catch-member 17 extends through the slots 15 and is provided at its inner ends with stops 19. The front of the catch-member 17 consists of a transverse bar 20, and the sides of the catch-member 17 are provided at their lower edges with depressions 21 adapted to engage with the i Specification of Letters Patent.

lower edges of the slots 15 to hold the door 12 in closed and locked position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Vhen it is desired to remove the contents of the receptacle, the catch-member 1'? is thrown out of engagement with the slots 15 by means of a downward pressure on the bar 20, usually effected by the garbage collector depressing the same with the shovel by which the contents are to be removed. The catch-member being so disengaged from the slots 15, the door 12 drops outwardly into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the proportions of the catch-member 17 being such that when the door 12 is fully opened, it will be in exact alinement with the plane of the bottom 9, thus permitting the shovel or similar implement used to remove the contents to be thrust inwardly across the inner side of the door 12 and along the bottom line without interruption, and enabling the contents of the receptacle to be speedily and easily removed; when the contents have been removed, a single upward blow from the shovel or other implement upon the bar 20 will force the door 12 into its closed and locked position.
Any fluid contained in the garbage can be readily removed by removing the screw-cap 11 from the drainage plug 10.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
1. In a garbage receptacle, the combination of a main body section having a bottom inclined upwardly from the rear toward the front, a cover hingedly mounted on the top of said body section, a door hingedly and vertically mounted at the front of said body section, a catch-member pivotally mounted on the outer face of said door and provided with a transverse bar parallel with the outer face of the door, and means whereby said door when opened is held in alinement with the plane of the bottom of the body section, substantially as specified.
2. In a garbage receptacle, the combination of a main body section having a bottom inclined upwardly from the rear toward the front, a cover hingedly mounted on the top of said body section, a door hingedly and vertically mounted at the front of said body section, a catch-member pivotally mounted E In testimony whereof, I have signed my on the outer face of said door, and provided name to this specification, in presence of two 1% With a transverse bar parallel 2th the1 ocyter subscribing Witnesses.
face of the door means Where sai oor When opened is held in alinemeiit with the GUSTAVE MAULLER' plane of the bottom of the body section, and Witnesses:
a drainage plug mounted in the bottom of L. B. CARROLL,
the body section substantially as specified. COLGATE SOUDDER.
