Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed December 9, 1905. Serial No. 291,066.
T0 all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, lVALLAoE WVHITE, of LLW'IGIlCG, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Refining-Engines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
In the class of refining-engines known as Jordan engines it is customary to provide a recess, known as a sand-trap, which leads from the bottom of the engine at its inlet end and is adapted to catch sand and bits of metal mixed with the pulp, which might otherwise injure the knives. A clean-out opening is provided in said trap, which in devices not provided with my invention can only be opened to permit the contents of the trap to be removed when the engine is not in operation. As these traps should be cleaned out at much more frequent intervals than those at which the engine is ordinarily stopped for other reasons, it often happens that the engine must be shut down for the sole purpose of cleaning out the sand-trap and that it is run for a considerable time after the trap should be cleaned out instead.
The object of my invention. is to provide means whereby the sand-trap may be cleaned when the engine is in operation.
I accomplish this object by the means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the inlet end of a Jordan engine provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of a sand-trap provided with my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively detail, plan, and edge views of the closing-slide.
As shown in the drawings, the body a of the Jordan engine is provided with a depending box or receptacle b, which is secured to the bottom thereof adjacent its inlet end, an oblong opening being provided in the bottom of the body which leads into the open top of the receptacle I). Said receptacle is provided with a hand-hole or clean-out opening I), which is adapted to be closed by a cover 0, secured to the end of the receptacle. The devices thus far described are well known in the art and constitute what is ordinarily termed a sand-trap.
In the upper edges of the side walls of the receptacle 1) I provide a pair of guideways, in which a slide-plate d is fitted, said plate being of substantially the same shape as the receptacle b and adapted to close completely the opening in the upper side thereof, and thus cut oil all communication between the body and the sand-trap. A stufling-box for the slide is provided on the outer side of the body a and receptacle 1), said stufling-box comprising a pair of plates 0, which are adapted to hold a packing e closely against the upper, lower sides, and edges of the plate. A bail or handle f is secured to the outer end of the slide. The cover 0 is provided with a rigid horizontally-extending bracket 9, and a vertical post h is secured in the outer end of said bracket by a set-screw i, said post It being adapted to be adjusted vertically in said bracket in such a position that its upper end will bear against the under side of the plate (1.
In the normal operation of the engine the slide (Z will be pulled out, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 3, so that free communication is permitted between the body a and the receptacle or sand-trap b. The post it constitutes a support for the outer end portion of the slide d to counteract the prying effect which such portion would otherwise have upon the inner end portion thereof, which remains in the ways and closes the opening through which said slide passes. If it is desired to clean out the sand-trap without stopping the engine, it is simply necessary to force in the plate to the full-line position of Fig. 3, so that all communication between the casing and the sand-trap will be out ofl, and then remove the cover a. After the trap has been cleaned out the cover is replaced and the slide again withdravm, returning the parts to their normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a refining-engine having a passageway in its bottom, a sand-receptacle connected thereto and into which said passage-way leads, said receptacle having a normally closed clean-out opening, and means for closing said passage-way, substantially as described.
2. In a refining-engine having a passageway in its bottom, a sand-receptacle connected thereto and into which said passage-way leads, said receptacle having a normally closed clean-out opening, a flat sliding plate for closing said passage-way, and means connected to said plate and extending beyond the body of the engine for moving said plate to its open or closed position, substantially as described. A
3. In a refining-engine having a passageway in its bottom, a sand-receptacle connected thereto and into which said passage-way leads, said receptacle having a normally closed clean-out opening, a pair of guideways at each side of said passage-Way leading to the outer side of the engine-body, a flat plate slidably mounted in said guideway and adapted to close said passage-way, and a support for the outer end portion of said plate when the latter is in its open or outer position, substantially as described.
4. In a refining-engine having a passageway in its bottom, a sand-receptacle connected thereto and into which said passage-way the outer side of the engine-body, a flat plate,
slidably mounted in said guideway and adapted to close said passage-way, and a verticallyadjustable post disposed to engage the under side of said plate and support the same when it is in its open or outer position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesess.
WALLACE WHITE.
