IMPRovEMENT IN vEcETABLE-GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters` Patent No. 139,173, dated May 20, 1873; application led April 11, 1::73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW S. MCNEIR and WILLIAM D. STooxToN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Graters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan or front View of our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
Our invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, illustratin g our invention, A represents the back or bottom, to which are aiiixed, as shown, the sides Al A. B shows a door or lid hinged l to the bottom A, closing the top or end of the grater. The sides A A are grooved, as at a and a', shown to form guides or ways for the grater C and box D. The gra-ter C is formed 'of a rectangular Wooden frame, c, to the upper .side of which is secured a suitably-perforated plate, o. This frame, with its plate, is located some distance above the bottom or back A, so as to give an easy passage to the article grated, which, in its reduced condition, passes through the plate and falls into a vessel provided for that purpose. The box D is formed of four sides, d, without top or bottom, and is shorter than the grater C, so that it may be drawn to and fro over said grater, projections or flanges d1 being provided for that purpose7 fitting in the'grooves a. E represents a follower, consisting cfa block, e, havi ing a perforated plate, el, on its under side, and a handle, e2, on top. The follower is provided with pins e3 which move in slots d2 in the sides of a box, anda pin', d4, which moves in a recess in that side of the box which is parallel with the lid B. F shows a crossbar, which serves at once as a brace to the sides A A and a stop for the box D, preventing it from sliding out at the lower end of the frame.
The operation is as follows: Place the article to be grated in the box D; put the follower in position upon it and press it firmly;
move the box to and fro until the article is reduced. y
When it is desired to wash the grater, the lid or door B may be opened and the frame O and box D slided out.
