Be it knownthat we, SOLOMON G. Lewis and VELPEAU J. WARD, citizens of the United States, and residents of Millard, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Turpentine Box and Spout, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to means for attachmentto pine trees for the collection of sap flowing therefrom known as "crude turpentine, and has for its object novel and improved means consisting of a peculiar face or spout adapted for ready attachment to the tree under the usual scoring of its bark, and a peculiar tank or box detachably supported by the face or spout, the tank or box having a hinged cover provided with an opening leading thereinto, all as shown by the accompanying drawings, hereinafter fully described, and with the novel features pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing our invention in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the face or spout and the sap tank or box, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the tank or box with its cover shown turned to uncovering position.

The scoring or cutting of the bark of pine trees in the turpentine industry being well understood, it becomes necessary for a full understanding of our invention to state that we employ a face or spout A constructed with side flanges B, converging downwardly, leaving a discharge passage-way O. Upon reference to Fig. 1 it will be'noticed that the upper edge D of the face or spout A is made substantially ti-shaped, conforming to similar scoring of the tree-bark. The face or spout A is fastened on the tree by means of nails F, driven thereinto tln'ough openings G in the upper corners or \I- shaped portion thereof, as will be understood upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2. .The edge D of the face or spout A provided with an angularl v-disposed liangeI-I, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) adapted to be forced into the tree, making a tight joint, and thus precluding escape of sap under the face or spout and its running to waste down the tree.

I denotes a suitable sap-box having its rear side extended at J. In the box-exten sion J we provide a simple opening whereby,

through means of a suitable hook K on the under side of the face or spout A, to support the box I in position to receive sap flowing through the passage-Way O at the lower edge of the face or spout.

In further carrying out our invention we provide the box I with a cover L, arranged to be turned on a pivot M from its position covering the box (see Fig. 4) when sap or turpentine is to be removed or poured therefrom. The cover L is cut away at N, forming an opening wherethrough when it is at closing position the flowing sap may enter the box. The chief object of the cover L is to hinder as much as possible dust, chips, and other matter getting into the sap or turpentine, thereby rendering it of less commercial value. V

The construction of our improved turpentine box and spout will be understood from the above description, and its use being obvious further description is deemed unnecessary.

Ne claim- 1. In combination, a face or spout constructed substantially V-shaped at its upper edge and said edge fashioned into an angularly-disposed flange, side flanges on the face or spout, and a passageway at its lower edge, a hook on the face or spout, a box provided with a pivoted cover, the latter having an entrance-opening therethrough, a perforated extension on the box adapted for suspending engagement with said hook, and means for securing the face or spout.

2. In combination, a face or spout constructed with an upper ti-shaped flanged edge, downwardly-converging side flanges, a hook depending from the under side of the face or spout, means for securing the latter, a box having a cut-away cover and also, a perforated rear extension, the cover being hingedly secured to the box, and the latters perforated extension adapted for suspending engagement with said hook.
