LATRINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 12, 1911.
Patented May 1 1, 1912.
Serial No. 626,740.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM M. SULLI- VAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latrines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a folding portable latrine designed particularly with refence to summer military camps.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a latrine exemplifying my invention: Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same: Fig. 3, a horizontal section: Fig. l, a perspective View of the latrine in folded condition: and Fig. 5, a vertical central section of the latrine when in folded condition.
In the drawings :1, indicates a square open-bottomed and open topped metallic box having its four side-walls articulated to each other: 2, the open lower end of the box: 3, a hinged juncture bet-ween the edges of two of the walls, the hinging being of such character that one of these walls may swing outwardly and then fold back against the other wall: 4:, a hinged juncture between one edge of the third wall of the box and the free edge of one of the first-mentioned walls, this hinging being of such character that the third wall may swing inwardly and fold against the inner surface of the wall to which it is hinged: 5, a hinged unoture between one edge of the fourth wall and the free edge of the remaining one of the firstmentioned walls, its hinging being of suclr character that the fourth wall may swing inwardly and fold against the inner surface of the wall to which it is hinged: 6, latches connecting the free edges of the third and fourth walls, the latches being illustrated as having the form of hinges with displaceable pintles: 7, the displaceable pint-les of the latches: 8, a top having a flange capping over the tops of the walls of the box: 9, a seat-hole formed in the top, this hole being margined by a downwardly extending flange: 10, a hinge uniting the top to the back-wall of the box, the hinge being of such character as to permit the top to swing down into a position parallel with the backcopies of this patent may be obtained for wall: 11, a lid hinged to the top and adapted to close closely down upon the top and cover hole 9: 12, a hinge uniting the lid to the rear portion of the top: 13, a Stop cooperating between the lid and the top and serving to limit the opening movement of the lid to such degree that the lid will not move to a position rearward of the Vertical plane of its hinge: and 14-, eyes for sustaining the latch pintles when they are in release position, these eyes being secured to one of the walls at its latching edge, and forming prolongations of the latch-eyes attached to that wall.
The latrine is to be formed of sheet metal, whereby there is produced a structure of small. weight and adapted to be thoroughly cleansed by fire or water to insure sanitary conditions during transportation of the latrine. \Vhen the latrine is out of use the lid,
. by its own weight, closes automatically and closes the top opening so as to prevent the ingress and egress of flies, a matter of very great importance in connection with the sanitary condition of camps.
\Vhcn the latrine is to be folded for storage or transportation, the latches are first released, after which one of the side-walls may be turned in against the back-wall, and the front-wall may be turned in against the remaining side-wall and the two pairs of walls folded against each other and the top folded against the pile composed of the four walls.
I claim Tn a device of the character described, the combination of a foldable rectangular box structure of sheet metal having an open bottom, a top formed of sheet metal, one of the side portions being provided with an inwardly extended member to which the top is hinged, the top also being provided with a downwardly-turned edge overlapping the upper end of the side structure, the top also being provided with a central aperture having a downward]y-turned lip, a sheet metal cover hinged to the top and adapted to close the aperture, and a stop on said cover to limit its opening movement.
\VILLIAM M. SULLIVAN.
