Be it known that I, NELSON SHmLDs, a
D kcitizen o-f the United States, residing at Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota,- have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in IIinges, of which the following' is a specification.
My inventionV relatesto hinges and particularly to hinges especially adapted for use in conjunction with grain doors of cars. .Itv is necessary that the doors of grain Acarsshall fit the door opening snugly at the bottoni and sides in order to prevent the grain from sifting through, and to this end it is ,usual to allow the door to rest on the sill or car Hoor when in closed position. On account of this construction and arrangement it frequently happens that the door bei comes wedged when being opened by particles becoming jammed between the bottom of the door and the car floor, and in freeing the door from such obstruction the force which is necessarily applied frequently results in breaking either the door, the hinge or both. i
The object of my invention is to provide animproved hinge for a grain door whereby the door cannot become jammed when being opened by small particles wedging between the lower edge of the door and the car floor.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hinge as mentioned which shall practically lock Vthe door when in closed position.
A further object is to provide a hinge as stated which shall be simple of construction, strong and durable, of low cost to manufacture and which may be applied to practically any'grain car or grain door now in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a hinge for a grain door whereby the door may rest firmly on the floor or sill when in closed position and can only be opened after it is raisedan appreciable distance above the level ofthe floor, and a support for the door while being swung to open position.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be more fully described hereinafter and-particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring now to the drawing 1 indicates the side o-f a car, 2 the floor and 3 the roof, the side 1 being provided with a door opening 4. The car per se forms no part of my invention and is therefore illustrated conventionally. 5 indicates the grain door closing the lower portion of the door opening in the usual manner'and 6 indicates stops of any preferred form for limiting the outward swing of the door.
`,The door is att-ached to the adjacent framing 7 by two or more hinges 8 embodying my invention, Each hinge comprises a leaf 9 adapted to be attached to the frame 7 and a leaf 10 adapted to be secured to the door. The leaf 9 is formed with a pair of alined knuckles 11-11 spaced a considerable distance apart and in which is .secured the pintle 12, and the leaf 10 is formed with a single knuckle 13 embracing the pintle and of considerably less widt-h than the distance between the knuckles 11. By this construction the leaf 10 is adapted for vertical movement with relation t'o the leaf 9 as well as rotary movement on the pintle.
In applying the hinges to the door they are arranged so that the door may rest upon the floor or sill of the car when the leaves 10 are in lowermost position and it is obvious that by this arrangement the door may be raised out of engagement with the floor before being opened. To insure that sov upper edge thereof is at a distance below the lower edge of the upper knuckle 11 substantially equal or a little greater than the depth of the knuckle 13. When the door is in closed position the end 17 of the guide 14 is directly behind the leaf 10 thereby locking the door against opening while resting upon the floor of the car. When the door is raised until the knuckle 13 abuts the upper knuckle 11 it may be swung inwardly and as soon as it begins to swing the lower edge of the leaf 9 rests upon the upper edge of the member 14, which member supports the door while being opened and while standing` in open position. As soon as t-he door is closed it will drop to rest upon the floor and cannot be opened until it be again raised as above described.
-It is obvious that by employing hinges of the character above described it is impossible for the doors to become jammed by the wedging of particles between the lower edge of the door and the floor, thereby increasing the life of the door.
The hinge is of simple construction, strong and durable and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Furthermore, it is obvious that the device may be applied to practically any grain door now in use.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A hinge comprising` a fixed leaf and a swinging leaf, a pair of spaced alined knuckles on the fixed leaf, a pintle arranged in said knuckles, a knuckle on said swinging leaf embracing said pintle and of less depth than the distance between t-he first said knuckle, and a guide formed on said fixed leaf and comprising a cylindrical member concentric with said pintle and spaced therefrom, the upper edge of said member being adapted to support said swinging leaf when in raised position and the end of said member abutting said swinging leaf when in lowermost position, substantially as described.
