NELSON SHIELDS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application tiled February 18, 1912. Serial No. 678,684.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, NELSON Smrms, a citizen .of the United States, residin at Minneapolis, county of Hennepin and tate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the followm is a s ecifieation.
My invention re ates to grain doors and particularly to hinges ada ted for use in conjunction with the grain ears of cars.
The object of my present invention is to provide an improved grain door which shall be adapted to rest upon the floor or sill when closed and which cannot become jammed when being opened, by particles becoming wedged between the-lower edge of the door and the floor.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved hinge members for a grain door which shall practically lock the door in both closed and open positions.
Other objects will appear ereinafter.
My invention consists generally in a grain door )rovided with the hinges hereinafter fully described and in the various details of construction and arrangements as fully set forth in the claim.
M invention will be more readily understoo by reference to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification an in whic Figure 1 is a detail lon itudinal section of a grain car rovide with a door equipped with a hinge embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the hinge mounting of the door with the parts in the osition they assume when the door is closed: Fig. 8 is a similar view with the parts in the position they assume when the door is fully o en and big. 4 is a horizontal section on t e line w-w of Fig. 2 and taken upon an enlar ed scale.
Referring now to t e drawings 1 indicates the side of a car having a door openin 2, 3 the roof and 4 the floor. The grain nor 6 is illustrated in Fig. 1 as closing the lower portion of the door opening 2 in the usual manner, and resting upon t is floor.
The door is hingedly connected to the side of the car or suitable framin by hin es 6, and my invention is comprise in this inge mountln of the door. Each hinge comprises a fixed leaf 7 adapted to be secured to the stationary portion of the structure and a knuckle secured to or formed upon the door 5. I prefer to form the door of sheet metal and form the knuckles 8 integral therewith by providing the door with lateral extensions or tongues 8', which are bent to form the knuckles as shown. The leaf 7 is provided with a pair of spaced alined pintle knuckles 9 and 10. These are spaced a considerable distance apart and secured in the same is a intle 11, a rod forming a common pintle or all the hinges being preferably em loyed. The knuckles 8 on the door are 0 considerable less length than the distance between the adjacent ends of the knuckles 9 and 10 and are slidably mounted on the pintle between said knuckles. 'lhe lowermost pintle knuckle, that is the knuckle 10, is enlarged in diameter and provided with an upwardly extending portion 13, which is of segmental cylindrical form and hollow whereby the knuckle 8 may freely pass within the same to engage or rest upon the knuckle 10. The upper edge 14 terminates at a distance below the lower end of the knuckle 9 slightly greater than the length of the knuckle 8 for a purpose which wil appear hereinafter. The outer edge 15 of the extension or portion 13 terminates substantially in a plane with the inner face of the door 5 when said door is in closed position, b which arrangement said extension practically locks the door when in closed position by the edge 15 abutting the adjacent portion of the inner face of the door or that of the tongues 8 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4-. The inner edge 10 of said extension terminotes in a plane substantially parallel with the inner face of the leaf 7 and spaced therefrom a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the door 5 whereby the adjacent portion of said door or the tongues 8 is received bet-ween the leaf 7 and the edge 16 when the door is in open position to substantially lock the door against closin To open the door it is raised unti the knuckle 8 engages the knuckle 9 and then pushed inwardly, the adjacent portion of the tongues 8' restin u on the ed 0 14 of the extension 18. Tiis olds the (001' out of engagement with the floor while being opened thereby preventing the same from becoming iammed. As soon as the door reaches ul y opened position the tongue 8' will dro) into the space behind the member 13 and t 0 door cannot be again closed until it is raised.
ilb
Ill)
my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis A hinge comprising a fixed leaf and a swinging portion, a pair of spaced alined knuckles on said fixed leaf, a int-1e supported jn said knuckles aknuc le onsaid swinging portion of less engtli than the distance between the first said knuckles and slidably mounted on said pintle, a segmental hollow e lindrical; extension projecting u wardliygem theylowermost knuckle on tiie fixed eaf, the, inner edge of said extension closed bein .provided. with a notch adjacent said fixe leaf formin a vertical edge and the olllelfledgethereo being vertical and adapt ed to abut the swinging ortion when in osition, said notci being of less de th t an said vertical outer edge.
En. testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two-subscribing witnesses.
NELSON SHIELDS.
