This invention relates to hinges, and has for one of its important objects to provide a very simply constructed hinge of more or less general application in which the parts 6 are so constructed, as to permit of the free swinging movement of the door or other element to which the movable hinge part is connected to its open and closed positions, and to cooperate with each other to limit the opening movement of the door.
It is another object of my invention to provide the cooperating hinge plates or leaves with coacting means imparting a vertical movement to the movable hinge leaf and the door when the latter is moved to open position and operating under the force of gravity when the door is released to return the same to its closed position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved hinge, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated several simple and practical embodiments of my invention, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Referring in detail to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6 thereof, 5 designates the stationary hinge part which consists of a heavy metal plate adapted to be rigidly secured by suitable scr'ewsas indicated at 6 to the door jamb or other fixed support 7. One vertical edgeof this hinge plate 5 is curved laterally as indicated at 8 and is formed with a tubular knuckle or barrel 9, the longitudinal edge 10 of the plate being spaced from the inner concave face of the curved part 8 thereof. This laterally curved portion of the hinge plate 5 and the wall of the barrel 9, preferably at the lower end thereof are formed with a continuous inwardly projecting flange 11, said flange intermediate of its ends being integral with a short vertically disposed lug 12 having the upper end thereof.
The other or movable hinge plate 14 is fixed by the screws 15 to the door or other movable member 16 and likewise is provided with a laterally curved edge portion 17, the extreme and simultaneously swing edge 18 of which is bent inwardly and terminates in spaced relation to the inner concave face of the part 17 to form an open tubular hinge knuckle, serted within the knuckle 9 of the fixed hinge leaf 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the draw- The hinge leaf 14 at the lower end of the tubular knuckle thereon is cut away or recessed to provide the spiral edge 19 thereon which is adapted to cooperate with the cam ed e 13 of the lu 12.
s shown in ig. 1 of the drawings, when the door 16 is closed, the edge 10 of the barrel 8 on the fixed hinge leaf is s aced from the inner face of the tubular uckle on the movable hinge leaf 14 so that in the opening movement of the door 16, said hinge knuckle may freely turn within the barrel 9. In this opening movement of the door, the spiral edge 19 of the movable hinge leaf rides upon the cam edge 13 of the lug 12 which gradually raises or lifts the movable hinge leaf, and of course, the door 16 to which it is attached vertically with respect to the fixed hinge leaf 5. The curvature of the wall of the tubular knuckle on the movable leaf 14 is such that this opening movement of the door will be positively limited by bearing contact of the edge 10 of the barrel 9 on the fixed hinge leaf with the inner surface of the knuckle on the movable hinge leaf at a point adjacent to its edge 18 and simultaneous contact of the inner surface of the curved part 17 of the movable hinge leaf with the outer surface of the barrel 9 at a point at laterally spaced relation from its edge 10. Thus an effective resistance is offered by these co- 0 erating parts of the two hinge leaves to any e ort to move the door beyond its fully opened position which would disengage the lower end of the spiral edge 19 from the upper end of the cam surface 13. Therefore, immediately upon the release of the door, due to its weight and the force of gravity, the spiral edge 19 on the movable hinge leaf coacting with the fixed inclined cam surface 13 causes the door to move vertically downward to its closed position. In this manner it will be evident that the closing movement of the door, is practically automatic.
It will be seen from the above description that by means of a very simple construction of the two cooperating parts or leaves of the hinge, I secure the desired gravity automatic action for moving the door to its closed position by means of a very simple structure, and one which can be produced at relatively small manufacturing cost. The arrangement of the coacting cam means on the hinge parts as illustrated in the drawings, while found to be very eflicient in its operation, is largely suggestive, since it is apparent that without these modifications these cooperating cam which is adapted to be in-.
parts might be located at the upper instead of at the lower end of the hinge or at an intermediate point as might be desired.
In Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slight modification, in which, at the lower end of the fixed cam surface 13, a notch or recess 20 is-provided to receive the lug or projection 21 formed on the lower end of the spiral edge 19 whereby the door may be releasably latched in the open position. However, upon applying manual pressure against one side of the door, the lug 21 will ride out of the notch 20, thus permitting of the continued gravity swinging movement of the door to closed position.
If the automatic gravity action in the operation of the hinge is not desired, the barrel of the outer hinge leaf may merely be pro.- vlded at its lower end with the inwardly extending flange 22 of uniform thickness upon which the lower edge of the tubular knuckle of the movable hinge leaf rests. In this case, it will be understood that the latter hinge leaf is not provided with the curved spiral edge 19 above referred to. A hinge of this construction, however, still retains the desirable cooperative relation of the parts of the two hinge leaves .to limit the opening movement of the door, as illustrated in Fig. 13 of the drawings. Also, in this construction, for the purpose of positioning the door or compensating for wear of the flange 22, I may provide a metal strip shown at 23 in Fig. 15 of the drawings, adapted to be arranged u on the flange 22 and having lugs 24 extending downwardly over each end of said flange.
As shown in Fig. 14 of the drawings, for the purpose of renewing the cam part 12 when the surface 13 thereof becomes excessively worn, I may provide this cam part with a recess as indicated at 25 to receive the upstanding lug 26 formed upon the flange 11. Owing to the angular relation'of the vertical edge faces of the lug 26, with respect to the axis of the hinge barrel, it will be apparent that the cam part is thereby held against lateral inward movement out of connected relation with the lug 26, and can only be moved upward in a vertical direction with respect thereto. Thus, when the cam surface of said lug becomes badly worn, it may be easily removed and a newlug applied in place thereof.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the several forms of my improved hinge and the advantages thereof in practical operation willbe readily understood. While the two parts of the hinge are preferably made of plate metal, they will'nevertheless, be very durable and may be applied to doors or other structures of considerable weight. Of course, it is apparent that the hinge parts may be made of various lengths as may be'found most desirable in view of the particular use to which the device is to be applied. Therefore, while I have herein disclosed several desirable practical constructions of my present invention, it is to be understood that the several parts thereof might also be incorporated in various other alternative forms, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A hinge comprising two hinge plates one adapted to be secured to a fixed part and the other to a swinging member, each of said plates havin a semi-tubular edge portion extending su stantially the entire length of the plate and having an inner open side, the tubular portion of one hinge plate fitting within the other for free swinging movement through'the open side of the tubular portion on the latter hinge plate, said latter hinge plate having means engaged by the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate to sustain the latter and the swinging member in connected relation with the fixed hinge plate, and the edge of said latter hinge plate at the open side of its tubular portion engaging the inner concave face of the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate adjacent the edge of the latter to limit movement of said hinge plate and the swinging member to open position, and said hinge .plates being further provided with coacting cam surfaces whereby the movable plate is shifted vertically and the swinging member lifted in the opening movement thereof, said cam surfaces under the gravity weight of said swinging member operating to automatically return the latter to closed position.
2. A hinge comprising two hinge plates one adapted to be securedto a fixed part and the other to a swinging member, each of said plates having a semi-tubular edge portion extending substantially the entire length of the plate and having an inner open side, the.
tubular portion of one hinge plate fitting within the other for free swinging movement through the open side of the tubular ortion on the latter hinge plate, said latter liinge plate having means engaged by the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate to sustain the latter and the swinging member in connected relation with the fixed hinge plate, and the edge of said latter hinge plate at the open side of its tubular portion engaging the inner concave face of the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate adjacent the edge of the latter to limit movement of said hinge plate and the swinging member to open position, the tubular portion of said fixed hinge plate being inner surface and at its lower end with a cam lug, and the tubular portion of said movable hinge plate having a spiral cam edge at its lower end to coact with said cam lug provided upon itsplates having a semi-tubular edge portion extending substantially the entire length. of the plate and having an inner open side, the tubular portion of one hinge plate fitting within the other for free swinging movement through the open side of the tubular portion on the latter hinge plate, said latter hinge plate having means engaged by the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate to sustain the latter and the swinging member in connected relation with the fixed hinge plate, and the edge of said latter hinge plate at the open side of its tubular portion engaging the inner concave face of the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate adjacent the edge of the latter to limit movement of said hinge plate and the swinging member to open position, said tubular portion of the fixed hinge plate having an'inwar-dly projecting flange on its lower edge and a lug projecting upwardly from said flange having a cam surface at its upper end, and the tubular portion of said movable hinge plate having a spiral cam edge at its lower end to coact with said cam surface of the lug and vertically lift the swinging member in its opening movement, said cam surfaces acting upon the release of said member and under the gravity Weight thereof to automatically return said member to closed position.
4. A hinge comprising two hinge plates one adapted to be secured to a fixed part and the other to a swinging member, each of said plates having a semi-tubular edge portion extending substantially the entire length of the plate and having an inner open side, the tubular portion of one hinge plate fitting within the other for free swinging movement through the open side of the tubular portion on the latter hinge plate, said latter hinge plate having means engaged by the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate to sustain the latter and the swinging member in connected relation with the fixed hinge plate, and the edge of said latter hinge plate at the open side of its tubular portion engaging the inner concave face of the tubular portion of the movable hinge plate adjacent the edge of the latter to limit movement of said hinge plate and the swinging member to open position, said tubular portion of the fixed hinge plate having an inwardly projecting flange on its loweredgeand a lug projecting upwardly from said flange having a cam surface at its upperend, the tubular portion of said movable hinge plate having a spiral cam edge at its lower end to coact with said inge comprising two hinge plates,
