HINGE AND FRAME FOR VAULT-COVERS.

SPECIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,705, dated April 28, 1885.

Application filed February 13, 1883. Renewed March 17, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MICHAEL Scorr WEL- LER, a citizen ofv the United States, residing at Oharlestown, in the county of Jefferson and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges and Frames for VaultOovers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is, first, to conceal the hinge connectingthe door and its frame, so that no tampering or interfering with said hinge shall be possible, and, second, to so construct the device as to allow the door to swing back to a given distance and there remain fixed.

My invention consists in the hereinafter-described means for attaining the said object.

This invention is adapted more particularly to the doors of safes, vaults, and the like, and to cellar and other horizontal doors.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improvement; Fig. 2, a transverse section of same through lines at 00, Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, detail views.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different views.

A represents the frame of the door, which may be constructed either in whole or in part of metal. Said frame has formed integral with it or attached to it on either side the boxes at, and said boxes are provided with slots a in their tops. The outer edges, a of these slots a are beveled inwardly, for the purposes hereinafter specified, and the boxes a have perforations a in their sides for the journals or pivots a of the hinges.

B represents the doors, and may be of any desired material. Attached to these doors by bolts or other suitable means are the straps G. Said straps are of metal, and are constructed with lugs a formed upon their under surfaces some distance from their outer ends, 0. The doors being secured to the straps of the hinges, as hereinbefore specified,the outer ends of said straps are inserted in the slots a. The apertures a and c are thereby brought into alignment and the pivots a inserted through said apertures. By this means the doors and frames are hinged together. It will now be seen that when the doors are closed the hingelugs c and the pivots a are entirely concealed from View, and any tampering-therewith thus prevented. At the same time the beveled ends of the straps are brought flush with the beveled edges of the slots a. By this means the introduction of powder or of instruments under the hinges for the purpose of breaking the same is provided against. When the doors are opened and thrown back, it will be seen that, on account of the pivot being below the surface of the doors and frame, said doors can only swing a little beyond aright angle to said frame, and must there stop.

This device is also particularly adapted for cellar and other horizontal doors, for the reason that by its use a perfectly level surface is exposed, and all danger to pedestrians from stumbling over protruding hinges, as in ordinary cellar-doors, is avoided.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is-- it The combination, with the doors B, having hinges O, constructed substantially as described, of the frame A,provided with boxes a, having closed back and sides,and cast integral with said frame, substantially as described, whereby the hinge is protected, for the purposes set forth.v
