Be it known that I, TIMOTHY E. MONAMARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Packets for Money,Bank- Notes, and other Valuables, of which the following is so full, clear, and exact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my improved packet. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the sliding drawer. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective of my improved packet, showing the door closed and the seals in place. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the front end of the inner casing and the outer casing, with the rear parts broken away. Fig. 6 is an end perspective view of the packet proper. Fig. 7 is an end perspective view of the packet, showing the sealing-strip broken away to expose the handle for operating the bolt, and showing such handle in a closed posit-ion. Fig. 8 is a sectional view on line or or of Fig. 6, showing the bolt and the handle for operating it.

The object of my invention is to provide a packet for money, bank-notes, and other valuables, which may be transferred from point to point by messenger, and which cannot be tampered with or broken open without the fact being detected by casual examination of the box.

Another object of my invention is to provide a safety-packet in which money and other valuables may be carried from point to point without liability of their being stolen or replaced by worthless matter without the fact that the packet has been broken being readily detected.

In a word, the object of my invention is to provide a safety-packet for messengers which cannot be robbed without detection of such robbery, the same being clearly shown by the device itself.

The device consists of the main or outer case, A, having a hinged door, A, the other end being closed.

B is abolt on the inner side of said door A,

made to fit into the pocket or slot B in the side of case A when the hinged door A is closed. The belt is operated by a handle, 13*, situated upon the outside of said door A and pivotally connected with the said bolt in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and 7, so that when it is desired to unlock the door it can be done simply by raising the said handle B and sliding back the bolt thereby. This handle to 0p erate the bolt B is so placed and so arranged as to be covered by the sealing-strip F, the object being to prevent it being operated without breaking the strip or seal.

0 is the reverse of a countersink or depres sion on the outer side of the hinged door A and corresponding with the countersink D on the side of case A, the purpose of these countersinks being to hold seals of wax or other sealing material, which are applied to both ends of the strip F of paper or other material. (See in Fig. 4.)

EE are bands of metal placed around the ends of the case A to give it strength and re sist wear in handling and preserve the shape of the case. Similar straps or bands may be placed around the body of the inner case, A, for the same purpose.

E is a slot or opening between the outer case, A, and the hand or strap E, through which the sealing-strip F, Fig. 4, is carried from one countersink, D, to the other, C, to secure the seal.

G is a handle, of metal or other material, at tached to the side of the case for carrying and handling the same.

H is a metal strip or guard attached to the inner side 'of the case A near the opening covered by the hinged door.

A designates the inner case, which may be either apartial box or slide, as shown at Fig. 2, or an inclosed boX, as shown at Fig. 3.

K is the lock frame or casing containing bolts K and K operated by the handle or knob K by which the inner case, A is held in place when put inside the case .A. These bolts K and K are intended to be pushed out by the handle or knob K so as to pass inside of the inner edge of the inner strip or guard H in case A, and held in that position by the combination-lock L. The inner case, A is made either in connection with the lock-frame K or detachable therefrom, as shown at Fig. 3, in which the hook I? slips through the staples o 0.

M M are two pieces 01' metal attached to the door to form a slide or receptacle for holding a card to bear the address or for other purposes. One end of the card projects over the countersink O and is sealed at the same time with the strip F.

The manner of using my packet or case is as follows: The money, bank-notes, or other valuables intended to be conveyed from one point to another are placed in the inner ease, A which is then attached to the loek-frame K, and both inserted and pushed into the case A until the flanges N of the lock-frame K rest against the inner strip or guard, II, Fig. 1. The knob or handle K is turned, causing the bolts K and K to project outwardly from the lock-frame inside the inner edge of the strip or guard II. The combination-lock L is then locked, by which the bolts are held in their position, and so remain until released by the combination-lock mechanism, when a reverse turn of the handle or knob K draws them in. IVhen the inner case, A", and lock-frame K are in place inside the case A, the outer hinged door, A, is closed and fastened by the bolt B. A strip of paper or other material is then sealed at the countersink D and passes through the slot or opening E between the outer case, A, and the strap or band E, and is carried over the closed hinged door A to the corresponding countersink, C, the address-card being at the samc'time placed in the receptacle formed for it by the strips M. The end of the sealingstrip and end of the address-card are sealed together in the countersink O. In this opera tion of applying the sealing-strip I it is made to pass over and cover a handle, B, on the outer side of the hinged door A, by which the bolt B is operated. The packet or case being thus closed or sealed, it is obvious that the lock cannot be opened or tampered with without breaking the seals or the sealing-strip F, nor can the bolt B be released and the outer hinged door opened without also breaking the strip F.

From the foregoing it will be observed that the packet can not be opened or tampered with without the fact of its having been tampered with being immediately detected. In some in stances I may perforate one side, to allow of the package being counted without opening the packet; or I may insert isinglass or mica in one or both sides, as may be desired.

Having now described the objects, uses, and construction of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and what I therefore claim, is

1. In a safety-packet of the character described, the combination of the main easing with the door having a bolt thereon, and a seal which extends from the opening edges of the door and casing and covering the handle which operates the bolt on the door, substantiallyas described.

2. In a safety-packet of the character de scribed, the combination, with the main casing provided with metal strips extending around the same at each end and having aslot between said main casing and the metal strip on the opening end of the casing, and a door which is provided with a locking-bolt, of asealing-strip which extends through said slot and is sealed to the door and easing, substantially as described.

3. In a safety-packet of the character de scribed, the main easing provided with an interior strip or guard and a door, in combination with an inner casing having a lockingbolt which engages with said strip or guard,

and a sealing-strip which is adapted to be secured to the main casing and the door when the latter is closed, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
