HASP-FASTENER.
insides.,
To all wlmi/t it may concern Be it known that l, Flinn T. l-Linnroiin, a citizen of the United States, residingat Tui-ners Falls. in the county of Franklin and State of lillassachusetts` have invented new and useful linprovenients in lclasp- Fasteners, of which the following is a specilication.
lThis invention is an improved hasp tastener for use on doors which are `tastened by means ot padlocks, the object oit the invention being to provide an improved hasp fastener in which the heads oit the securing` screws are covered so that surreptitious re- .ino tal of the hasp or of the staple plate is prevented and hence a door provided with my improved hasp fastener eannotbe opened without leaving` evidence ot' such fact, the invention consisting` in the construction, combination and arrangement ot devices hereinafter described and claimed,
ln the accompanying` drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of my improved hasp fastener showing the hasp engaged with a staple and ready for the insertion ot the shackle oi. the lock in the staple, the lock with its shackle beingindicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the attaching plate of the hasp Fig. a is a detail vertical transverse view taken on the plane indicated by the line @ha of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the staple plate and its staple.
ln accordance with my invention l provide an attaching plate l which corresponds in size and shape with the lined member 2 oit the hasp and is here shown as of oblong rectangular form provided with a central opening 3 and also with securing screw receiving openings a near its corners. At the lower inner corner the said attaching plate is provided with an outstanding` horizontally arranged flange 5. rihis attaching plate is in practice secured by means ot screws in the openings fl to a jamb or wall at one side ot a door opening, as indicated in Figs. l and 2. The staple plate 6 is also secured by screws or the like to the door, at a suitable point, and is provided in its corners with openings 7 tor the reception et the securing screws, the staple being; indicated at 8 and being here shown as arranged across the center of the staple plate.
The hasp comprises, in addition to the fixed plate 2, a member 9 which is hinged Specification of Letters Patent.

as at l0 to one end et the plati 2 or tif-:ed member, and the said hinged or pivoted member 9 which is adapted to coact with the staple plate and staple has an opening,` ll to clear the staple and permit the latter te project through said openingwhen the hasp member 9 is closed against the outer side of the staple plate.
The xed member 2 of the hasp, after the attachingl plate has been secured to the wall or janib placed on the outer side ot said attaching plate. so as to cover the saine and to bear on the iiange 5 and is then permanently and pivotally secured to the attaching` plate by means oit a rivet l2 which is arranged and headed in the central opening 3 of the attaching plate, and in a similar openingl 13 with which the said fixed plate or nieinher oi the hasp is provided lt will be observed and understood that when the plate 2 has been thus secured to the attachingzg` plate it serves to cover and conceal the attaching plate and to cover and bear on the heads et the securing screws so as to prevent the securing screws trom being' removed excepting by first either bending the fixed covering plate 2 out of the way or else drawing` the rivet., either of which operations will so mar and injure the plate 2 as to clearly betray the tact that the hasp has been tampered with.
rlhe pivoted member 9 ot' the hasp corre* sponds in size and shape with the staple plate 6 and when it is closed over said staple plate and the opening ll is engaged by the staple, the said hasp member 9 completely covers the staple plate and the heads of the screws in the opening; 7 and hence prevents the screws from being` removed and the staple plate from being; detached while the hasp is secured to the staple plate by a padlock. l3nt when the hasp is turned on the pivot rivet l2 so that the plate 2 is at right angles to plate l the screw heads are uncovered. Hence installation and removal of the hasp when desired are facilitated. rlhe flange 5 by engaging,` the end of the plate normally holds the hasp in horizontal operative position.
My improved. hasp is adapted to loe used on -freight car doors and also on the doors ot other structures and etliectually prevents surreptitious opening` of such door.
l claim:
The herein described hasp comprising a relatively fixed member and a movable member pivotally connected thereto, said movable member having a staple receiving slot, in combination with an attaching plate and e staple plate, said plates having screw openings and respectively corresponding in size and shape with the xed and movable members of the hesp and being adapted to be covered thereby, the attaching plate being calso provided with a flange at its lower side to engage one side of the fixed member of the hasp, and e pivot element arranged centrally of the fixed member and Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
