LOCKING DEVICE FOR BOXES AND THE LIKE.
Patented July 16, 1912.
Serial N0. 623,074.
Specification of Letters Iatent. Application filed April 24, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
whereupon the end 14: is positioned upon the Be it known that we, FRANK J. MAoKLiN, inner end of the plate 3, and the spring Fnaxit TRIMMER, and CLARENCE HARBI- 6 returns into position shown in 1g. sox, citizens of the United States, residing above the end it and thereby holds the lid at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and in closed position. An opening 16 is provided in the lid 11 through which the spring be manipulated and forced away 14:, whereupon the lid State of Ohio, and useful Improvements in vices for Boxes and the Like, following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a locking construction for a box provided with a hinged lid; the box as shown in the drawings is utilized chiefly for the storing of liquor in bottles, although it may have other uses. Essentially the lock is divided into two portions, one carried on the lid and the other mounted on the upper edge of the side of the box, and when the lid is in its closed position, a key is permanently applied to these look portions or members; also in combination with these parts we provide a spring latch which operates to strengthen the locking construction and also to keep the lid closed when the key member is not in place. 7
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box containing our improvements in the locking device; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the box with the lid closed, the section being taken through the lock; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the portion of the locking construction carried on the side of the box, the view being taken from the inner side.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a box having on the upper edge 2 of one side thereof a portion 3 of a lock, comprising a plate secured to the edge 2 channeled at 1 for the reception of a key member 5. At 6 15 shown a spring member having its upper end formed in a loop shown at 7, said loop being adjacent to the channel 1 in rear thereof.
The lid 8 is have invented certain new Locking Deof which the 6 may from the end portion may be raised.
When the lid is in its closed position as shown in Fig. 2, a key member 5 formed of the stem 17 which carries thereon the crossed wire spring 18 is inserted into the registering channels or openings 4: and 13; while being inserted the spring 18 is collapsed, and when the key is seated, the spring 18 expands and engages against the walls 19 and on the upper and lower portions respectively of the locking device and thereby the key is prevented from being withdrawn. The head 21 of the key is provided with the wings or lugs 22 and 23, which take over the outer faces of the portions 12 and 8 of the locking 'device and thereby hold these shell like members from separation. The plates 3 and 12 having the channels 4: and 13 respectively thereon are practicall shell members, and when they are brought into register, the shell is adapted to the reception of the key as noted.
Our device herein described provides a double lock formed of the cooperating parts mentioned, the spring lock 6 being released by manipulation through the opening 16 in the lid 8 of the box. The key member is frangible and operates as a seal and is not removable except by breaking.
What we claim is: p
1. A. look for a box provided with a hinged lid, comprising a shell member mounted on the upper edge of said box, a second shell member carried on the lid and adapted to register with said first shell mounted on the side 9 of the member when said lid is in its closed postbox by means of the hinges 10 and is shown tion, a seal key adapted for application to in Fig. 1 in open position. The lid on its said registering shell members by engaging the same internally and externally, whereby said lid is locked in closed position.
2. A look for a box with a lid thereon, comprising a shell member mounted on the upper edge of said box, a second shell member mounted on said lid adapted to register with said first lid is in its closed position,
free edge 11 carries a portion 12 of a lock member comprising a plate which is chan neled at 13 for the reception of an appropriate key member When the lid is lowered and approaches its closed position, the inner end 14L of the portion 12 of the looking construction engages the loop 7 on the spring 6 and forces said spring inwardly, a spring latch shell member when said mounted on the inner side of said box and In Witness whereof We aiiiX our sigma adapted to engage said shell member on tures in the presence of two Witnesses.
said lid when said lid is closed, and a seal FRANK J. MACKLIN. key adapted to be applied to said shell FRANK \V. TRIMMER. members in their registering position by CLARENCE HARBISON. engaging the same internally and exter- Witnesses:
nally, whereby said box is provided with a DENNIS J. OGRADY,
