tails from which duplicate keys may be ordered, from the maker of the lock, 0r,"of which other uses can be made; The recess 2 isnormally closed by the plate 3, which latter may also be provided on its outer or innumbers or To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. MosE- LEY, a citizen of the United States,-residing at Stamford, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in v the key, so that when the art to which it appertains to make and in position, it presents the appearance of a fixed and permanent part of the key. plate 3 is provided at one side with a small i the wall of the recess, and is engaged at its opposite side by the fl of a part of the key, so that some identification or designating numbers or marks can be attached'to the key in a concealed manner, and so that the numbers or marks thus concealed can not be fully identified from numbers or marks, with reference to its owner, its location oruse, untilpart of the key is removed to expose the sald numbers or marks, and so that such numbers or marks concealed within the recess can be changed without changing or disfiguring the exposed surface of the ey.
Y may be tools, thus permit- -to be removed when it partlcularly adapted for safe deposit boxes, and other places where-there are to be a large number of locks in use, and where 0th convenience and safety to both the renter and rentee is desirable.
key number shall be unknown or concealed, while the box-number or the other number or mark shall be known and exposed. My into place such othervnumber inside and concealed by the plate or cover, thus concealing all designating numbers or marks.
-Where changeable combination key locks are used my invention provides a means for a number or mark at the bottom of the recess. Fi 3 is aview in section showing a means or securing the plate in place, and Fig. 4 is a view of the plate removed. I
1 represents a key of any approved form.
In the drawings I have might otherwise be placed on the exposed surface.
ere locks not of a changeable combination key type ,are used, customary to conceal the bittings by inclosing the keys in sealed encover or plate.
The key 1 is provided with a recess 2, in which numbers or marks are stamped or. otherwise formed or placed; These numbers or marks may designate the key number, the
room, safe or box number or any other de- 111 some safe deposlt companies I y cases itis desirable and necessary that the .bers or marks, also the tumblers device for removing the plate or cover, and the rentee can then make record of, or remove the number or mark, and replace the late or cover or a new velops, or the locks and keys in sealed packages, to conceal both the keys and their numof the locks until selected by a tenant. Where such methods are to be followed, my invention, if used, would still further increase the security of the renter and rentee, by concealing the key numbers or marks and woul also provide a means of adding other numbers or marks in a concealed manner within the said recess, and also provide a way to change any of such marks or numbers concealed within said recess without disfiguring the exposed surface of the key.
It is customary in many companies and banks to provide a list of the key numbers, so that in the event of the loss of one or more keys issued to the rentee for any particular lock, the company may furnish the lock maker with the key number and proper authority, and thereby procure duplicates for the rentee, thus saving unnecessary expense by forcing or otherwise opening the door. By the use of my invention it will now be possible for the company or bank to avoid keeping this record, and at the same time, avoid confusion or excessive cost where keys are lost, for example: the keys can be ordered originally to have the key numbers or marks concealed by a plate or cover (the plate may or may not be marked on either surface with the box number or other designating num er for convenience): When one of these locks is rented the keys can be given to the rentee with directions or v one with or without additional concealed or exposed numbers. This provides for the ready re-production of keys or any particular look, without the necessity of exposing the key or other numcials 'of the renting company. 1
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A key provided with a recess, a designating number stamped or formed within said recess, and a removable cover plate fitting said recess and concealing said designating number, removed the number in said recess cannot be seen.
2. A key provided with a recess, a removable plate fitting said recess and provided at one edge with a tongue adaptedto enter a socket in the wall of the recess, and a detachable rivet secured to the key with its flange overlapping the edge of the plate atthe side opposite the tongue.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
