SECURING nnvron.
insertion filed June 8, 1925'. serial m, 35,741.,
This invention relates to $861 ring devices for closures of all kinds such as doors, chest covers and the like and has for its object the provision of a novel padlock shackle in combination with butts or the like replacing the usual hasps or staples, the arrangement an cooperation of the parts being such that prying apart or breaking of the lock or the staple replacements will be practically impossible so that whatever objects or articles are fastened will be secure against the efiorts of tampere'rs and would-be thieves or robbers An important andmore specific object is the provision ofa padlock having its shackle provided with a heavy head designed to cooperate with buttmembersof correspondingmovable elements to which elements may be sliding doors, lnnged 1y heavy construction and arrangedin such a manner with respect thereto:thatthere will beno spaces be inserted butts. H
An additional objectis the provision of a combination of this character which. will be simple and inexpensiveto manut'acture easy to install and operate, positive in action, etlicient' and durable inservice, and a general improvement in the art;
within which aprying tool may for destroying the lockor the \Vith the above and other objects and ad-' vantages in view,-tl1e invention Consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which: 7
Figure 1. is anon: elevation of myimproved lock showing it in applied position and associated with the improved butts.
Figureil is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking upwardly. V I
Figure 3 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 1 but with the butts injsection, this view showing the/lock in open position and in the act of being applied or removed. 1
Figure 4: is a perspective view of a modified form of butt, and 1 Figures 5 and 6 are views of other butts. Referring more particularly to the drawings the letters A and, B designate relatively be secured together doors or a sliding or hinged door and its jamb, such details being absolutely immaterial as the invention capable of employment for a wide variety of purposes.
In carrying out the invention I provide a pair of butt members 10 and 11 mounted upon the doors or other elements A and B respecelement.
the memhers10 and 11 on the doorsor i'vely. Each otthese members includes right angular-1y shaped body into the element upon which it is mounted so asto be fiushtherewith and served that each body member has a portion 13 recessed into the edge of the door or other Each body member has formed thereon an outstanding shelf or flange 1 1 and the flange of the memberlO is provided with a circular hole 15 while the shelf of the memportions 12 recessed it will be obher 11 is formed witha slot 16 opening out to the edge. hen the doors or other mom bers A an 1 B are in closed position the members 10 and 11 will abut as clearly indicated in Figure to the screws 17 or other elements. A
In connection with these butt members I make use of a padlock including the-usual or any preferred body member'18 containing any suitable lock mechanism and having connected or associated therewith a shackle ineluding a long leg 19 permanently connectedwith the lock body and rotatable and slid able with respect thereto, and a'shorter leg 20 detachably engageablc with the lock body in a well known manner; specificdetails of thelock' are not given as they form no part of the present invention, it being suilicient to call attention to the novel feature whichisthe enlarged heavy head 21 formed on and con necting the legs 19 andQZO of theshackle. In actual practice. itmay be preferable that the head 21 be of the same size and shape the shelves or ledges 14; when they are totogether and of the saine size and shape as the cross sectional configuration of the lock Assuming that the doors or other members A and B'have been movcdinto closed position and that the butt members 10 and 11" are in abutting engagement, it will be seen that when the lock is open and it is desired to apply the same, the leg 19 of the shackle is engaged with the slot 16 by lateral movement the butts and that of the lock with respect to v the shackle is" then so disposed that the shorter leg 20 will register with the hole 15 Qfso that access cannot be had the like used torholdi'ng so th at it may be inserted therethrough, subsequently to which the lock body is brought into registration with the contacting shelves or ledges and the leg 20 moved into and engaged with the lock body in a well known manner. It will be observed that when the lock is thus applied the head 21 will fit closely against llO the tops of the shelves or ledges 14 while the lock body 18 fits snugly against the undersides thereof, the peripheries of the lock body, shelves and head 21 being then coextensive. Obviously there are no appreciable crevices or spaces in which a chisel or other prying tool may be inserted for the purpose of prying open or breaking either the lock or the butt members engaged thereby so that seeurity will be assured.
In some special instances it may be necessary to use butt members of other forms than that disclosed in Figures 1, 2 and 3, and in Figu re 4 I have shown a butt member 22 of a type particularly designed for use in connection with horizontal closures such as the tops or covers of tool chests, boxes or other articles in which there is an upwardly movable hinged top. In such an event two of the butt members 22 must be employed, one on the body or main portion of the chestor box and one on the cover thereof. Both butt members would be the same and each includes an elongated flat plate-like member having holes 23 for the passage of screws or other securing members and formed at one edge with an extension Ql having a hole 25 and an open ended slot 26 therein. When butts of this type are used the extensions 24 of the two and the holes 25 and slots 26 will register, the former being adapted to receive the short leg and the latter being adapted to receive the long leg of the lock shackle in exactly the same manner as above described.
In Figure 5 I have shown butts 27 adapted to be used in connection with sliding doors and in this instance these members are formed as upright elongated plates at one edge of which are laterally extending portions :28 at the upper ends of which are forwardly extending ledges or shelves 29, one being provided with a hole 30 and the other with an open ended slot 31 for the same purpose as above indicated.
In Figure (5 I have shown a type of butts to be used on a single door cooperating with a jamb and in this instance one butt 32 is formed with an extension 38 co-planar therewith and provided with a horizontal laterallyextending shelf or ledge 3st provided with a hole 35. The other butt 36 has a right angular plate member 37 at one edge provided at its top with a ledge or shelf 38 formed with a slot 39. In all forms the operation of placing the lock in position or removing it is identically the same and in all cases it will be observed that the holding action should be secure and the securing device practically incapable of being tampered with owing to the tight fit or close relation of the parts.
IVhile I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a padlock having its shackle including long and short legs connected by a relatively h wavy and large head, and butt members of plate-like formation adapted to be secured to relatively movable elements, said butt members being recessed into n'ieeting edges of a member and closure whereby to be non-removable, including outstanding ledges, one ledge having a. hole and the other an open ended slot therein, the hole being adapted to receive the short leg of the shackle and the slot being adapted to receive the long leg thereof, the head engaging upon the top of the ledges and the lock body engaging against the undersides thereof, whereby the lock when fastened will fit closely about and against the ledges to prevent the leaving of cracks of sutlicient size to permit the insertion of prying tool, and whereby the lock will be in'nnovable with respect to the butt members.
2. In combination, a padlock having its shackle including long and short legs connected by a relativel Y heavy and large head, and butt members of plate-like formation adapted to be secured to relatively movable elements, said butt members including outstanding ledges, one ledge having a hole and the other an open ended slot therein, the hole being adapted to receive the short leg of the shackle and the slot being adapted to receive the long leg thereof, the head engaging upon the top of the ledges and the lock body engaging against the undersides thereof, the head, ledges and lock body having the same contour, whereby the lock when fastened will fit closely about and against the ledges to prevent the leaving of cracks of sutiicient size to permit the insertion of prying tool, and whereby the lock will be immovable with respect to the butt members.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
JOHN v. SUNDQUIST.
