HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1921.
Application filed November 19, 1920. Serial No. 425,170..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lno KULns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Washington, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hasps, 'of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to hasps, and more particularly to a safety hasp.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a hasp of simple construction and operation which maybe produced at small cost and which may be applied'in such manner as to eliminatepossibility of unauthorized removal of the hasp. object is to provide a haspwhichis specially adapted for use in corners in connection with sliding doors for garages and similar structures. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the hasp in unfolded or extended condition.
Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the hasp as applied to a swinging door.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the hasp as applied to a sliding door.
The hasp comprises a base plate 1, a body plate 2, and a securing plate 3. The base plate 1 is provided with a plurality of openings adapted for reception of securing screws 4 by means of which the plate is secured to a door 5 or other structure. Plate 1 is provided along its upper edge witha plurality of sleeves or knuckles 6 which interengage with knuckles 7 provided on the adjacent edge of plate 2. At its broader end plate 2 is provided with twoknuckles 8 which receive between them a sleeve 9 on the inner end of plate 3. A pintle rod 10 is inserted through the interengaging sleeves 6 and 7 of plates 1 and 2, and is .then bent at right angles and inserted through the sleeves 8 and 9 of plates-2 and'3, this rod being provided at each end with a head 11. As will be understood, this rod may first be bent into the desired shape, the sleeves or knuckles 6 and 7 and 8 and 9 being then bent over the rod, or the rod may be applied in any other suitable or preferred manner.
The hasp is secured to door 5 by screws 4 in the known manner, the heads of these screws being preferably countersunk in plate 1. Plate 3 is provided with an open- A further ing 3 adapted to receive a staple 12 secured todoor frame 13 in any known or preferred manner. Then the hasp is in operative p0 sitlon plateQ. folds downwardly over plate 1 thus preventing removal of screws 4, and plate 3 is secured against outward movement from the door frame by shackle a of look A. The L-shaped pintle rod 10 serves to connect the plates 1, 2 and 3 soas to present maximum resistance to movement of plate 2 away from. plate 1, thus rendering it verydiflicultto open the hasp to such an extent as to per{ mit the removal of screws 4. The hasp constructed in this manner is particularly well adapted for use in corners, that is in places wherethe plate 3 is turned outwardly at right angles to plate 2, as illustrated in; F ig 4. In this figure the door 5 slides in the door frame and plate 3 fits against the lateral face of side beam 14 of the door frame, this plate being rigidly connected to plate 2 by pintle rod 10 in such manner as to prevent undesirable play or looseness between the different plates of the hasp. In addition, by having the pintle rod 10 passing through sleeves 6 and 7 and 8 and 9, removal of the rod by cutting off heads 11 is prevented. Also, if the rod were cut at its angle, there would be an arcuate or curved portion at each end of the sections of the rod which would render removal of these sections very diflicult if not impossible. This provides a hasp of the safety type which cannot be removed from the door either by removal of the securing screws or of the pintle. In addition, the pintle rod 10 serves to materially reinforce the structure as a whole.
If desired, though not necessarily, a bolt 15 of standard type may be inserted through plates 1 and 2 and secured through the door, this bolt providing supplemental means for positively preventing movement of plate 2 away from plate 1. For this purpose plates 1 and 2 are each provided. with a squared opening 16 which are in register when the plates are in operative relation, these openings receiving the usual squared portion adjacent the head of the bolt. Though I prefer to use the bolt 15, the provision of this bolt is not essential, as the hasp possesses sufiicient rigidity when in operative position to prevent access to the securing screws 4. In this connection it is to be noted that the hinge axis of securing plate 3 is disposed at right angles to the hinge axis of plates 1. and 2 thus permitting ready turning of plate 3 at right angles to plate 2 without rendering the hasp flexible to such an extent as to permit access to the securing screws.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a hasp, a base plate, a body plate at one side of the base plate, a securing plate at one end of said body plate, the securing plate and the body plate, and the body plate and the base plate, being provided with interengaging sleeves, and a single pintle rod secured through all of said sleeves.
2. In a hasp, abase plate, a body plate, a securing plate, the securing plate and the body plate, and the body plate and the base plate, being provided with interengaging sleeves, and a pintle rod secured through all of said sleeves and extending about the body plate so as to reinforce the same.
- 3. In a hasp, a base plate, a body plate, a securing plate the base plate and body plate being provided along their adjacent edges with inter-engaging sleeves, the body plate being provided at one end with spaced sleeves and the securing plate being provided at one end with a sleeve fitting between the spaced sleeves of said body plate, and a substantially L-shaped pintle rod passing through the sleeves of the base plate and the body plate and the body plate and the securing plate.
I. In a hasp, a base plate adapted to receive a plurality of securing screws inserted through the same, a body plate corresponding substantially in size and shape to the base plate, said plates being provided at their adjacent lateral-edges with interengaging sleeves, the body plate being provided at one end with spaced sleeves, a securing plate provided with. a sleeve fitting between the sleeves at the end of the body plate, and a substantially L-shaped pintle rod secured through all ofsaid sleeves.
5. In a hasp, a base plate, a body plate, and a securing plate, the body plate and the securing plate being hingedly connected and the base plate and the, body plate being hingedly connected, the axis of the hinge connections between the securing plate and the body plate being disposed substantially at right angles to the axis of the hinge connections between said body plate and the base plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
