NITED STATES PATENT EEIOEC WILLIAM E. MORGAN, OE oswEeO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR To AMES IRON WORKS, OE sAME PLAGE.
AIMPROVEMENT IN DOORS FOR FEEDING STRAW TO FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,524, dated February 9, 1875; application filed v January 15, 1875.
Figure l is a front view of my improvedv doors, and Fig. 2, a plan'ot' the same, showing particularly the levers and handle by which the doors are opened and shut.
My improved doors are specially designed and adapted for the use of straw as a fuel for steam-boilers; and myinvention consists in the peculiar construction and combination, with the doors, of certain levers or arms and va sliding` rod, hereinafter described.
A A' represent the doors, and B the frame in which the doors are set. C and C' are revolvin g posts, to which the doors are attached,
and upon which they swing as on hinges, the.
said posts having their bearings in the top and bottom plates, a b, of the frame B. The upper ends ot' the said posts extend through the upper plate, a, of the frame B, and on them, respectively, are attached the arms or levers D D. E is a rod, arranged to slide in the supports d d', secured upon the upper face of the plate a. Secured on this rod is a cross-bar, F, and G G are links, jointed respectively to the opposite ends of this crossbar and the free ends of the arms D D'. The doors, being of equal width, and severally wider than half the space between the posts C C', meet in the center of said space when closed, at an angle of about forty-five de grecs, as shown by dotted lilies c c' in Fig. 2, and swing inward back against the side walls of the frame B When open, as shown by the dotted lines f f'.
It is evident that when the handle or rod E is drawn out, the cross-bar F, the links G G', and arms D D', as shown by the full lines in Fig. 2, will act to close the doors, and that, from this position, the doors may be swung open inward, either by pressure directly against the doors themselves, or by pushing the rod E in, into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
These doors, with their frame, and the other devices described, are fixed in the front ot' the fireplace ofa steam-boiler. They are spe cially designed for use on boilers of engines employed as motors for thrashing-machines in which straw is used as fuel. Such engines are necessarily operated surrounded by quantities of material highly combustible, and it is very important that every possible safeguard should be provided against the danger of communicating fire to this material in the act of supplying fuel to the boiler. When straw is employed as fuel this danger is very great when the fire-fronts and doors of ordinary construction are used 5 but it is almost entirely obviated by the use of doors constructed and operated as above described.
The straw is laid in the lnouth of the frame while the doors remain closed, and then the doors are opened by pushing the straw directly against them, and after the straw is all securely carried -into the iire-place, the tireman conveniently closes the doors by merely pulling out the rod E, without danger of the burning straw escaping out ot' the doorway.
The devices shown and described-namely, the rod E, cross-bar F, links G G', arms D 1)', and revolving posts C G'-constitute a cheap, easily-constructed, durable, and convenientlyoperated mechanism for opening and closing the doors, and it is to these devices, in connection with the doors and frame, that I limit my claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in connection with the frame B, of the doors A A', posts C G', arms D D', links G G', and rod E, substantially as and for thepurposes described.
In witness I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of January, 1875.
WILLIAM F. IMORGAN.
