SMOKE-PIPE CONNECTION AND oIIEcK-ImMPERIOR HEATERS. I
1,048,197. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 191 2.
Application filed December 24, 1910. Serial No. 599,180.
and State of .Wisconsin, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Pipe Connections and Check-.Da1npers for Heaters, of which the following is a'specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The main object of this invention is to provide for the connection of the smoke pipe with a heater either in a vertical or a horizontal position, and to adapt, a check damper for use with such smoke flue in either position. a I
It consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described andpointed out in the claims. I V
In the accompanying drawing like charac ters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the smoke hood and check damper of a boiler, fnrnace or other heater embodying the invention, a
portion of the dome and jacket of the heater being shown, and the hood being arranged for connecting the smoke pipe with the top thereof, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the smoke hood and damper as seen from the I right with relation to Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a I view similar to Fig. 2, showing the check opening of the hoo ,so that the smoke pipe damper reversed and connected with the top may be connected in a horizontal position with the end opening of thehood; Flg. t
. is a detail view of the damper frame by itself ,Fig. 5 is a similar view of the damper detached; and Fig; 6 is an enlarged section on the line 6-6, Fig. 2, showing one. of the damper hinges. I
' Referring to Figs. l and 2, a deslgnates the smoke hoodof a heater which is preferably cast ormade in the form of a cylindrical pipe, and is bolted or otherwise fastened in a horizontal position to the dome b or upper part of the heater. It is formed at its outer end and on top in vertical and horizontal planes with openings and collars c and (Z for the interchangeable connection therewith of the smoke pipe, 6, which is nected with the top opening and collar d in a vertlcal position. A flanged check damper frame f, interchangeably".fitted in the end and top openings of the ho'odis de-v high and low sides thereof wit-h pivot bearmgs j. is is a check damperformed or provided on one side with hinge or pivot pins Z, which are interchangeably fitted. tothe bearings 7'. on either side of the damper frame, and are confinedtherein by caps m removably fastened to the frame, as "shown in Fig. 6, by bolts nl These capsfit over the sides and outer ends ofthebearings'j, which project from the frame andare held independently of the bolts n against endwise displacement in one direction by lugs 0 cast on the frame. The hinge or pivot. pins are formed orprovided with lugs 79 which by engagement with lugs or' projections g on thebearings j, limit the opening of the damper in either of its positions at the end or the top of the smoke hood a. The frame i is formed on opposite sides with latchlugs 7*, which cooperate with a latch spivoted series of teeth for holding the damper open more or less, the latch being weighted so that when it is released it will move out of engagement with whichever lug r it is ar' ranged to operate.
In order to connect the smoke pipe 6 with the end opening and collar 0 of the smoke hood, which is often necessary or desirable the caps m and hinge or pivot pins'l of the damper, to the bearings j on the opposite orhigh side of the inclined seat 71, and by disengaging the bolts 9 from the lugs h, transferring the damper and damper frame to the top opening and securing it in the position shown in Fig. 3-in like manner to corresponding lugs inside of the collar 03, so that the damper when closed will incline downwardly from its hinged side in both positions, as shown by Figs. land 3. j I
The changes above mentioned are easily [to one side of the damper and having a andquickly made, and the heater is thus I adapted to varying conditions requiring the smoke pipe to be taken therefrom either vertically or horizontally.
I claim:
1. The combination with a smoke hood having an opening in one end and an opening in the upper side thereof for interchangeable connection therewith of a smoke pipe and a check damper, of adamper frame interchangeably fitted to said openings and having an inclined damper seat and means at the higher and lower sides of said seat for hinging the damper to the frame, ani a damper adapted to be detachably hinged to said frame at either the higher or lower side of said seat and to be closed by gravity against its seat in either position of the damper frame.
2. The combination with a smoke hood having end and side openings one in a vertical and the other in a horizontal plane for interchangeable connection therewith of a horizontal or vertical smoke pipe and a check damper, of a damper frame interchangeably fitted to said openings and having on opposite sides thereof pivot bearings for the damper, a reversible damper having pivot pins interchangeably fitting said bearings and detachable caps for securing said pivot pins in the bearings on either side of the frame.
3. The combination with a smoke hood having end and side openings for the interchangeable connection therewith of a smoke pipe and a check damper, of a damper frame interchangeably fitted to said openings and having on opposite sides thereof pivot bearings for the damper, a reversible damper having pivot pins interchangeably fitting said bearings and provided with stop lugs for limiting the opening of the damper, and means for confining said pivot pins in the bearings on either side of the frame.
4. The combination with a smoke hood having end and side openings for the interchangeable connection therewith of a smoke pipe and a check damper, of a damper frame interchangeably fitted to said openings and provided on opposite sides with pivot bearings and on the remaining sides with latch lugs, and a reversible damper having pivot pins interchangeably fitting said bearings and a pivoted latch adapted to work with either lug on the damper frame according to the position of the damper.
In witness whereof I hereto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
