HOT-AIR FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,806, dated March 28, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER F. FILLIEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Air Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section showing the different parts properly assembled. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detached view showing the portion of the casing and illustrating a joint. Fig. 4is a view showing the different parts of the furnace proper discon-- nected.
The present invention has relation to hotair furnaces; and it consists in the dilterent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the base-plate, which is formed of a size to correspond substantially with the size ofthe furnace designed to be constructed and upon which the diiterentpartsof the furnace proper are supported.
The grate and ash-pit section 2 is located and arranged substantially as illustrated in the drawings and isprovided with the radial flanges 3, which radial flanges are formed .upon the periphery of the ash-pit section 2,
except at the point or place where the lateral extension 4 is located, which lateral extension is for the purpose of providing a means for removing the ashes and like material from the ash-pit.
Upon the top or upper side of the ash-pit section 2 is located the grate-bar-holding frame 5, which is provided with the circular recesses 6, which recesses are located as illustrated in Fig. 5 and are forthe purpose hereinafter described.
The grate-bars '7 are pivotally attached to the frame 5 and are located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 5, and for the purpose of providing a means for rocking the grate-bars 7 they are each provided with the arms 8, to which arms is pivotally connected the bar 9, said bar being connected to the lever 10, which lever is provided with the operatinghandle 11. For the purpose of properly holding thelever 10 in operating position it is pivotally attached to the upper portion of the ash-pit section 2.
Upon the top of theash-pit section 2 is located the lower section of the combustionchamber or fuel-pot section 12, the bottom or lower end of which is held in proper position by means of theflanges 13, formed upon the top of the radial flanges 3, it being understood that for the purpose of securely connecting said section suitable cement is to be used. The section 12 is provided with the integral tubes 14, which integral tubes are opened at their ends and are formed by the flanges or ribs 15, which flanges or ribs project into the section 12. The top or upper end of the section 12 is provided with the annular flange 16, which annular flange is for the purpose of holding the upper section of the combustionchamber 17 in proper position.
For the purpose of providing a means for placing fuel into the fuel-pot proper the integral extension 18 is provided. The upper section 17 is provided with a series of tubes 19, which are formed by means of the flanges or ribs 20, which flanges project into the section 17. v
For the purpose of providing continuous tubes which extend from the bottom of the lower section 12 to the top of the upper section 17 the tubes in each section are so formed that they will come directly over each other and are properly connected together by means of the flanges 15.
On the top of the section 17 is located the plate 21, which plate is provided upon its bottom or under side with circular notches or recesses 22, which notches or recesses are so located that the top or upper ends of the ribs 20 will be entered into said notches at the time the plate 21 is brought into proper position with reference to the other parts of the furnace proper. A short distance above the plate 21 is located the plate 23, which plates are for the purpose of providing a means for connecting the hot-air tubes 24E and holding ICO them directly over the tubes 14 and 19, said tubes 14, 19, and 24 all being connected in such a manner that they prod uce one continuous air-tube, said air-tubes being extended upward into the top or upper end or portion of the casing 25, to which casing the lateral tubes or pipes 26 are connected in the man'- ner described.
For the purpose of conveying the smoke to the dome 27 the pipes 28 are provided, which pipes are connected at their bottom or lower ends to the plate 21 and at their upper ends to the plate 23, which plate constitutes the top of the dome 27. It will be understood that a pipe 29 is to be connected to the dome 27, which leads to and communicates with a chimney.
The hot-air pipe or tube sections 14 and 19 are located within the shells of the fire- bottom sections 12 and 17, by which arrangement they are brought in such a position that they will become heated, and by reason of the fuel being located against the flanges or ribs they will remain heated, thereby increasing the capacity of the furnace proper.
By locating the tubes around the fire-pot proper and leaving the bot-tom or lower ends open a draft will be produced by reason of the hot air extending to the top of the dome or casing, which arrangement greatly increases the heating capacityof the furnace, inasmuch as the dome 27 will become heated to substantially the same extent that it would without the additional tube-sections 14, 19, and 24.
For the purpose of regulating the draft the door 30 is provided with the slide 31, which slide is operated to open and close the openings 32 by means of the lever 33, which lever is pivotally attached to the door and is provided with the chain 34, which chain may be held in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, or it may be extended upward and into the upper rooms of a building, at which point the slide 31 can be operated.
To enter the lower portion of the casing 25, the tube 35 is provided with the damper 36, said damper being operated by the lever or handle 37,to which handle or lever is attached an operating-chain 38.
For the purpose of providing a means for connecting the sections of the casing 25 together the bands 39 are provided,which bands are provided upon their inner sides with the flanges 40, which flanges are bent, as illus trated in Fig. 3, so as to provide a means for entering the sections of the casing, as illustrated in said Fig. 3.
It will be understood that cement is to be employed, so as to providea dust-proof joint.
For the purpose of strengthening the plate 21 and at the same time preventing it from sagging it is provided with the radial flanges 41, which flanges are located and arranged as illustrated in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that a door, such as 42, is provided for the purpose of closing the furnace, which door is of ordinary construction and arrangement.
The location of the tubes or pipes 14 and 19 is such that they will remain heated so long as there is any fuel in the fire-pot, inasmuch as the fire comes in direct contact with the ribs forming the pipes or tubes, by which arrangement heated air will be conveyed to the upper portion of the casing for a great length of time after fuel has been added.
For the purpose of properly holding the plates 21 and 23 together and at the same time connecting the upper plate or cover 43 of the dome 27 the clamping'bolts 44 are provided.
For the purpose of assistingin holding the bottom or lower end of the combustion-chainher in proper position the grate-bar frame 5 is provided with the circular recesses 6, which recesses receive the bottom ends of the tubecasings formed in the lower section.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combination of abase-plate, having located thereon the grate and ash-pit section 2, said ash-pit section provided with the radial flanges 3 and said radial flanges provided with the flanges or lugs 13 located upon the upper ends of said radial flanges, the fuelpot section 12, located upon the radial flanges of the ash-pit section and provided with the integral tubes 14 formed by the ribs 15, the
annular flange 16 formed upon the upper end of the section 12, the section 17 provided with theseries of tubes 19 formed by the flanges 20, the plate 21 provided upon its bottom or under side with the circular notches or recesses 22, the plate 23, the dome 27, the combustion-fines 28, andoutlet-flue 29, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
