HOT-AIR FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,769, dated July 26, 1892. Application filed March l5, 1892. Serial No. 425,057. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM THUENER, J r., and PAUL HERCHENBACH, of the city of St.
l Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot- Air Furnaces, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to improvements in hot-air furnaces; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a rear eleva-A tion of my complete invention located within f a drum of the ordinary construction, the said drum being partially broken away.` Fig. 2 is a cross-section showing my invention located within a suitable drum; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, the lower portion being broken away.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a circular drum of the ordinary construction, which is provided with the usual ports 2, which are located at the upper end thereof or near the top of the said drum, through which the hot air is adapted to pass.
3 represents a furnace, which is tubular in shape in cross-section and is provided with a suitable door 4t, closingthe opening 5, formed in said furnace for supplying the same with fuel. In the lower portion of the said furnace is located the ordinary grate-bars (i, all of which are of the ordinary construction.
Formed in the rear of the furnace and at a suitable distance from the top thereof is a circular opening 7, around which is fastened a short pipe S for attaching the combined heating and combustion flues, hereinafterdescribed.
9 represents the combustion-fines, through which the products of combustion passing from the furnace are adapted to pass and radiate the heat therefrom before the saine passes to the chimney. Said combustion chamber or tine consists of a central vertical pipe 10, which is provided with a circular opening 11, and around said opening is secured a short pipe 12 of such a size as to receive the pipe 8, attached to the furnace, and when the parts are attached or connected, as shown in Fig. 3, the said pipe 10 will be in communication with the said furnace. 13 represents a coupling, which is composed of two parts, which are united by suitable rivets or bolts 14, and when so united circular openings Yare formed which allow the pipes hereinafter described to bel easily attached to the same and in communication therewith. The said pipe l0 is in communication with the center of the casting 13 through the lower central Opening formed therein.
l5 l5 represent two circular pipes or fines, which are located on either side of the said flue or pipe lO, the size of which `are about one-half that of the said flue 10 and are arranged a little forward ornearer the furnace or in alignment with the said furnace, as may be desired. The upper ends of the said pipes 15 are in communication with suitable openings formed in the en ds of the couplings 13. In'that side of the coupling opposite the furnace 3 and immediately'above the pipe 10 is formed an opening 1G, and in communication therewith is a short pipe 17, the end of which is cut at a suitable incline, and to said end is hinged a door 1S, which is adapted to close an opening in said pipe. To the lower free end of the pipe 17 is rigidly attached a semicircular plate 19, through which a rod is adapted to be passed and through the rear side of the casting 13, forming bearings for the same. Located within said coupling and im mediately above the pipe l0 is a circular damper 20, which is adapted to close the opening formed in said pipe when the handle 2l is turned in the proper direction, and, further, has the effect of regulating and cutting off the passage of the products of combustion through the flues or pipes l5.
22 represents a circular opening, which is formed in the top of the coupling 13, into which suitable pipe connections 23 are inserted, through which the products of combustion pass and are directed to the chimney or other source.
24 represents a similar coupling, which is likewise composed of two sections and bolted together by suitable bolts or rivets 25, and

thepipes 10 and 15 are in communication With the same in a like manner.
26 represents a short pipe, which is located to one side of the coupling 24 and in communication therewith, which is normally closed and is only employed to remove the soot or other accumulations which are deposited in the bottom of the said coupling.
The outer surfaces of the couplings are so constructed as not to obstruct the heat radiating from the furnace, but allow the same to freely pass to the top of the drum 1 and through the ports 2 to any suitable source.-
When a large amount of heat is required of the furnace, the damper 2O is closed or in a reverse position to that shown in Fig. 3, in which instance the products of combustion Will be drawn down the large central line 10, into the coupling 24, and up through the side of the smaller side tiues 15 to the coupling 13 to the chimney or other source, in which instance a large amount of heat is radiated from the said pipes, owing to the construction of the same and the passage through which the products of combustion are caused to pass.
By the construction of the pipes as above stated, the products of combustion on passing from the furnace Will be held in the. pipe 10 a sufficient length of time before the same passes out through the pipe 15, whereby a greater amount of heat is radiated on account of the said products of combustion being held in said pipe 10 until all heat is radiated therefrom. This is caused by the pipes 15 being considerably smaller in size than the central pipe 10.
Should but very little heat be desired, and onlysiich an amount as would be radiated from the furnace itself, the damper 2O is turned in the position as shown in Fig. 3,511- lowing the products of combustion to pass directly through the chimney without being passed through the pipes 10 and 15 in manner previously described.

The door 18, attached to thepipe 17, is normally closed; but when it is desired to cut off all draft from the furnace the same is open, as shown in Fig. 3, allowing the air fioin the outside to pass through pipes 17 and through the chimney Withoutin any Way affecting the furnace.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim isl. A hot-air furnace comprising two couplings, the upper one of which is in communication with the chimney or other source, three pipes or ues in communication with -said couplings, the larger or center one in direct communication with the furnace, a valve o r damper located in the upper coupling for directing the products of combustion, and a suitable opening also formed in the said upper coupling and provided with a suitable door through which the air is allowed to pass when it is desired to cut off the draft of air from the furnace, substantially as described.
2. A hot-air furnace consistingof a large central flue 10, in communication With the furnace, side fliies 15, located on either side of the said ue 10 and in communication with the same, couplings 16 and 24, composed of sections bolted together, into which the ends of the pipes are adapted to be fitted, an opening, such as 26, for removing the soot or other accumulations, a damper 20, located in the coupling 1G and adapted to close the upper end ot the pipe 10, a pipe 17, in communication with the said coupling, through which air is adapted to pass, and a door 18, attached t-o said pipe and adapted to close the opening formed therein, substantially as described.
