UNITED STATES PATENT UEETEE,
THOMAS J. GRAFF, OF Pl'lllvllllll'iG,PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 395,131, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed May 25, 1888. Serial No. 275,045. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
lie it known thatl, THOMAS J. GRAFJI, a resident of Pittslnirg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful. Improvemen t in Portable Stoves or Ranges; and'l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to portable ranges or stoves which are constructed so as to be used as right or left hand, as desired,according to the position of the fire-place and sink in the room. In this class of ranges it has been custoinary to have them so constructed that the fine-box is cast separate from the body of the range or stove and adapted to be attachei'l thereto by suitable means to either side of the range said flue-box either having a pipe collar formed therewith or else the part of the top plate having the pipe-collar being reversible, and when it is desired to reverse the range the flue-box is removed and secured to the opposite side and the top plate reversed, so that the pipe-collar will be above the fluebox, while a Hat plate covers the recess formerly covered by the flue-box. \Vhere so many parts have to be removed to reverse the range much inconvcnie'nce is experienced, as the bolts or screws by which the parts are attached become burned. and broken, owing to the intense heat to which they are exposed;
The oljijeet of my invention is to provide a simple and c'lticient means of changing lhc range or stove from right to left hand, or vice versa, without lhe use of a detachable flue-box. or other such rcvcrsible parts, and, furthermore, to provide means for adjust iug the pipe within openings either in the top ol' the range or in the side, as isdcsircd, to carry oft the prmluets of comlnistion.
To these ends my invention consists in a range or stove both side plates ol. which are formed with enlargements or ii uc-boXcs which evtcnd toward the rear of the range, and open ings leading from said. llu(, -boxes through top plate to carry ollf the smoke, and plates for covering said openings when not in use, such plates forming extra lids for the range, in combination with the central division-plate in the top line and a deflccting-plate in front of the smoke-flue in use.
To enable others skilled in the'art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in. which- Figure 'l a top view. the top plates renn'ivcd. Fig. is a section on the line a: :1", Fig. 2; and Fig. i is a detail View showing another way of arranging the smoke-escape.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
The grate, aslrpit, ovens, &c., are those used in any ordinary ran go or stove, and therefore need nofurther description. The side plates, 0, are cast with the enlargement a. at the top thereof, so that when the range set enlargements or flue-boxes Z) are formed within the range on each side of the top line thereof, and I prefer to havethe said enlargements or flue-boxes l) extending entirely to the rear end of the range.
The top of the range is provided with covering-plates c and lids c, fitting therein, and openings (lin. said top ilates, c,lead from the enlargements or line-boxes I), through which the products of combustion are carrnid ol't', while openings may also be formed in lhe side plates, (1, comm u nicating with said 'l'lueboxes, as at c, if it is desired to carry off the smoke in that way. As only one llue-opening, (1, in the top plate, c, is used at a time. the other such opening is closed by suitable lid or cover, l,and said lid 1' on the top sur- Face of the range lils in a scat d andresis on suiiablc lugs or a tlaugc casl on the surfacc-platc ol' the range in lhc same manner in which the lids rest in tho lop plate, c, said lid?! being also supplied wiihiho usual seat, (1, to which thcordinary lid-lillerinay bcapplied to raise it. lly this constructimi the opening (I, supplied with the covcring-plate (1 can be used as extra lid and perform the same function as the lids c. The side covering-plates, c, are attached to the side plates, (I, and cover the openings 2 by means ol' bolls passing through the covcr-pla1es and through lugs e cast on the side plates, u, olf the range within the openings by which they are held securely in place. To adjust the stove-pipe as shown in. Fig. 3, the stove-pipe j, which is supplied with a suitable flange or collar, f, near its lower end, is inserted into the opening (7, said flange or collar f resting on the Fig. 2 s a like view,
Joe
flange or lip (Z and thereby supporting the stove-pipe. Instead of the above manner of attaching the stove-pipe, the pipe-collar g (shown in Fig. 4) may be employed, said pipecollar having suitable lugs, g, cast thereon and adapted to coincide with corresponding lugs, g cast in the openings (Z or e in the top or side plates of the range, both of said lugs being supplied with bolt-holes, through which ter thereof and in a line with the partition-wall h of the line 71, while the middle portion of said partitionwall t" is constructed to form the hinged damper 1, adapted to be raised or lowcred from a point without. Attached to the damper are the rings 1;, which form bez'irings for a rod, 7;, said rod being journaled in the from the lug M to which it was secured by end portions of the partition-walls 1". To raise and lower the damper l, a rod, in, with a ring, 011.,011 one end thereof and. attached to the top of. the damper, passes through an opening, m in the side plate, a, of the range to a point without, where by a suitable handle, m the damper is operated. The rod m is attached .in such a manner to the damper! that when it is desired to operate itfrom the opposite side from that shown in the drawings all that is necessary is to detach the rod from the damper and pass it through a like opening, 172?, in the opposite sile plate, and then reattach it to the damper.
Pivotcd at the forward end of the central division-plate, "1', by a suitable pintle, n, is the deflecting-platen, while the other end of said deflecting-plate is secured. to a lug, 21?, cast on the body of the range, a bolt or pin passing through the deflecting-plate and lug 11 and a like lug, n being t'ormed on the opposite side, so that the flue-plate n can be swung on its pintle from one side to the other, according to the flue-box employed, and secured .in place. j
'When it is desired to change the range or stove from a right to left hand, or vice versa, all that is necessary is to remove the covering-platc ll and adjust within the opening (Z the stove-pipe with the collar or flange f thereomby which the pipe is supported, while the covering-pl ate (1 covers the open ing which quently requires little labor or time. 11', however, the ordinary pipe-collar is used, as shown in Fig. 4, the collar g is detached by removing the bolts which pass through the lugs g and g and said pipe-collar is attached in the same way to the opposite top side opening of the flue-box.
\Vhen the left-hand flue-box is in use, the deflecting-plate n is secured in the position shown in Fig. 2 and directs the products of combustion away from the flue-box in use into the compartment on the right, and if it is desired to heat the ovens the damper Z will be in its upright position, so that the products of combustion can pass down the right side of the rear flue and along the same side of the bottom flue and return by the left side of the bottom flue and end flue up and out the stovepipe, and by this indirect route the ovens become thoroughly heated. \Vhen a direct draft is desired, the damperlis lowered by the handle m of the rod or, and the products of combustion pass directly to the flue-box and out the stove-pipe. \Vhen the opposite flue is to be employed, the deflecting-plate a is detached the bolt or pin if, and is swung over and attached in the same manner as before to a corresponding lug on the opposite side of the range, while the rod m, attached to the damper l, is changed to the corresponding opening on the opposite side.
I am thus enabled to obtain a right and left hand stove which can be used in either position without the neeessity of taking it apart or reversing any of the castings permanently attached, and can therefore be arranged for use in either position with but little time or trouble.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by letters Patent, is
A portable range or stove having enlargements (6 on each side of its top flue, forming smoke-ti ues I), openings in the top plate above said fl ues I), said openings forming smoke-escapes, with one of which the smoke-pipe eonnects, while the other is closed by a cover and forms an extra lid for the stove, a central division-plate in the smoke-flue, and a deflecting-plate therein in. front of the smoke-flue in use, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
had been occupied by the pipe and serves the l purpose of an extra lid.
No screws or bolts l are necessary in this operation, and it conse- In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS J. (burn, have hereunto set my hand.
