Mwaeeeaaww RUTLAND M. GARRETTSON, or site HARBOR, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 85,923, dated Januar/y 19, 11869; a-ntedated Jamba/ry 2, 1869.
INDROV'ED THILL-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to nthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'ma/y concern."
Be it known that I, RU'ILAND M. GARRETTsoN, of Sag Harbor, in the county of Suiiolk, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'Phill-Coupling; and Ido hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.l
rlhis -invention relates to the manner of attaching the thills of a carriage to' the axle; and
It consists in forming a divided clip for the thills, and in securing the same by a screw-bolt, in the 1nan ner hereinaer described.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the clip, with the thills attached aecording to my invention.
Figure 2 represents a top view of the' clip.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the thill turned over, showing its under side -or half the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond-ing parts. -A represents the clip, which surrounds the axle in the 4ordinary manner, with projecting ears B lB and pins 'C O, as seen in iig. 2.
These two pins, O O, are surrounded by a metallic box, lined with leather or other suitable material, (for preventing rattle and noise,) the box being composed of two s 'emicircular parts, one of which, D, is attached to the end of the thill E, and the other half of the box, F, is a separate piece, as seen in the drawing'.
The leather lining is seen in red color.
The two part'sof the box are not full semicircles, and 'consequently they do not come'in contact, but a space is left between them, as a provision for wear,` either of the leather lining or the pins C.
Through the centre of this box there* 1s a bolt hole, g, and h is a bolt, which passes through the' box and between the ends of the pins C, with a screw-nut, t',
on its lower end, as seen in the drawing.
By this bolt the two parts of the box are oo nned to the pins CC, and/any wear may be compensated for by screwing up the nut i,so that the connection is kept snug'and free from rattle or noise' whenin use.
The parts may be made of either wrought or malleable iron, and of any desired size and proportions.
It will be seenthat the thills are readily detached,
and that, consequently, the leather lining can be renewed as often as may be required, to keep the connection perfect.
The advantages of this arrangement are many, and must be obvious to all. A
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- The thill-coupling, consisting of the two-part box D, E, and F, adapted to receive a leather lining, and secured upon the pins C, projecting inward from the opposite sides of frame B, by means of the central bolt h, passing through the parts D F, between the pins- G C, and provided, on its inner end, with the screwnut i, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein shown and described, for the purpose speci- RU'ILAN D M. GARRETTSON.
