`Letters .Patent No. 85,830, dated .Mmmm/ 12, 1869.
' IMPROVE!) CHAIN-BELT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom alt/may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM N. JULIAN and MORRIS KIDNOCKER, of Tarlton, in the county of Pickaway, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Chain-Belt; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the 'art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specif cation, in which-v v A Figure lis a' perspective view of a portion of our improved belt, a portionof the leather'covering being removed, to show the construction of `the belt.
Figure 2 isa drawing illustrating its use.v
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this 1invention is to provide a chainbelt for machinery, which is superior to the ordinary chain-belt heretofore in use. v
Our invention consists in wrapping an endless chain or chain-belt with one or more layers of strap or thongleather. 4 l
The chain, when thusprotccted, will run `smoothly without slipping, and with very slight wear, and will seldom get out of repair. v g
It is particularly desirable as feedgearing belting for portable saw-mills, for which use it has been found superior to any belt heretofbre known to us through a long term of experience.
' As shown in the drawings, the chain is enclosed by an inner and outer wrapping of leather' thongs, lettered respectively A A andB B, but it is not necessary that double wrapping, as there shown, beemployed, for
a single wrapping, wound close., will answer nearly as well, though the double wrapping would be somewhat preferable under certain conditions'.
Each wrapping is composed of two straps or thongs of leather, as shown, which'are wound around the chain with a long pitch.
The ends are fastened by rivets, stitching, cr in anyv other suitable manner, and the-lengths of the different straps should be, in practice, 'so arranged that the ends thereof will not all be at the same point on the belt.
We desire to be understood as not limiting ourselves to the use of leather alone, for raw hide is also available for this purpose, and is a desirable substitute.
Canvas of stout texture, or vulcanized rubber, would be alsoexcellentequivalents for this purpose, or braided thongs or stm'ps of these o1; any other suitable material would answer as equivalents also.
l Having thus described ouriuvention,
We claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patenty K As a new article of manufacture, thevchain-belt lfor machinery, protected throughoutits entire length with strips'of leather, lor equivalent, wound thgreon in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
WM. N. JULIAN. MORRIS KIDNO'CKER. Witnesses: v
