Description

JAMES FNLAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Lette/rs Patent No. 84,813, dated December 8, 1868.
IMPROVED KNEE-BOOT FOR HORSES.
The Schedule referred to'in' these LetterePatent and malng part 0f the Sanie- To all whom it ana/ zj concern:
Be it known that I, .Lures Finney, of the city, county, and State 'of New York, have invented a new and improvedKnee-Boot for Horses; and'I hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in whichf Figure l represents an inner-side view of a kneeboot for horses, constructed according to my improvement, and f Figure 2, a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line x x'.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object 'ofthis invention is to provide for the more effectual protection of theglegs of horses against injury by interference; and
The invention consists in thearrangement, upon a knee-boot, of iiXed and sliding pads, whereby-the boot may be applied with more satisfactory results; and
It furthermore consists in-the extension or elongation of the boot above the knee, whereby protection is given to the upper part of the leg as well as the knee.
In order that others may understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the boot, constructed of leather or'.
other suitable material, and formed after the ordinary manner of knee-boots, except that it is of an elongated formatiom-so that it will extend ,suiiciently above the knee for the protection ofthe upper part of the leg as well as the knee.
This vboot has. provided, upon'the central portion and extremities of its inner surface, pads, a a a, for
Apreventing the boot from touching the leg, thereby to assist in relieving the leg of the concussion of the blow om the interfering hoof.
b b are straps, transversely arranged upon the boot, for securing the same, by means of buckles or otherwise, to the leg, and are or may be made to slide through suitable loops upon the outside of the boot A,
l are susceptibley of adjustment by sliding along the said 'i straps, for application of the boot to legs of diiferent sizes.
. In the operation of this invention, the boot or shield A is placed uponth'e leg liable to injury, in such manner. that the inner or concave surface of the smaller end A will t upon the convevity' of thev inner side of the knee-joint, While the larger end A will extend Ahigher'up the leg, for the protection of that portion of the leg above the knee. When the boot is thus applied to the leg, the central pad c will fit Within a naturally-forn'ied cavityon the inner side of the leg above the knee, to serve as a security against the displacement or turning of the boot upon the leg. The pad'c is adjustedupon the strap b, so as to come opposite tov and fit in a corresponding naturally-formed cavity upon the outer side of the leg, to further assist in preventing the boot from turning. The buckling of the strap b will coniinethe lower and central portion of the boot, while a similar adjustment of the pad c and buckling of the strap b will secure the upper part thereof.
This boot may be. made equally applicable to either"V leg by constructing itwith its upper and lower portions, A A', of uniform size, and the strap b so arranged as to be easily shifted 'om one portion to the other, and to operate alike upon either.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-- I 1. The knee-boot A, constructed and provided, as described, with xed pads a da, and adjustable pads c-c, to slide upon fixed or sliding straps b b', substaniallyvas hereinspeciied.
2. A knee-boot, constructed with upward projection A', for protection of the knee, and the leg above the knee, substantially as herein described. Witnesses: JAS. FINLAY.
