ISRAEL L. LANDIS, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED ATTACHMENT TO STIRRUPS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 69,920, dated October 15, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIs, of Lancaster, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Attachment to Common Stirrups for Equestrians; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making1 a part of this specification, in whichl ished metallic surface, from which the foot so readily slips when the horse makes a sudden sideling plunge, thereby causing the rider often to lose his equipoise, and perhaps 'a bone broken as a consequence.
Fig. 2 clearly shows the form of gutta percha or india-rubber, a, for the center foot-plate, and side iaps b for wrapping around the sides,
which side aps have a hole punched through,
and a slit for a double-headed button, or its equivalent, Fig. 3, by which the ends of the side flaps are fastened together around the sides of the stirrup, as shown by Fig. 1.
No further description is required. Any one can make and apply my invention. The object, however, is to have them manufactured expressly for the trade.
,I am aware that buffalo-skin, sheep-skin, and the like have been attached to stirrups. Such I do not claim; but -I am not aware that an article has ever been manufactured and put on sale, as a new article to the trade,
made in the manner and applied as herein specified.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is-
The detachable india-rubber foot-pad a, when provided with side flaps b, which are secured to the sides of the stirrup by means of buttons and button-holes, or their equivalents, in the manner and for the purposes as herein set forth.
