Description

No. 44,961. ATBNTBD. NOV. 8, 1865,
. w. R. LANDPEAR. DEVICE TO PREVENT SLIIPI'NG ON 105,
Wz'in ear/er 22270221 1:
, UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM It. LANDFEAR, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTIOUT.
DEVICE TOv PREVEN'f SLIPPING ON ICE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,961, dated November 8, 1865.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. LAND- FEAR, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Preventing Slipping on Ice; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereemployment of an elastic band, to be worn T around the boot or shoe in such a manner as that one portion of the band shall pass under the sole and rest upon the grounth'that part thus passing under the sole having secured to or mingled with itsome substance which shall byits frictional or gritty properties prevent the foot from slipping, when worn, upon ice.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe 1tsconstruction and operation;
circle the boot or shoe and clasp it firmly around that part of the foot immediately for- Ward of the instep, as shown at A, Figure l, 3 in the drawing; or the band may be so applied as to be worn upon theheel or other part of the foot. To that portion of the band which, thus applied to the boot or shoe, shall pass under the sole, and therefore in the action of walking shall come in contact with the earth, I apply coarse sand, emery, or other similar substance, B, having sharp, gritty, or frictional qualities. This gritty substance may be applied to the elastic band either by mingling it with "the material of which thehand is composed or by securing it by means of cement or otherwise to the surface of the band.
When this band is applied to the boot or shoe in the manner above described and worn upon icy or other smooth or slippery places, the shoe is prevented from slipping by means of the friction or resistance caused by the gritty substance connected with the band coming in contact with the ice or smooth surface. What. I claim as-my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters latentof the United States,
isv The employmeutof the elastic band having connected with it the gritty or frictional sub- 1 construct my band usually of rubber or other elastic material, of such size as to enstance, to be worn upon the boot or shoe, for
i the purpose of preventing slipping upon icy I or other surfaces, as herein described and set- 2 forth.
