TO :ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, V-IRGIL PRICE, of the city, county, and Stute of' New York, haveinvented a new and improved Method of Hanging Swords; and Ido hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malte :1nd use the same, reference being `had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifica-tion.
This invention relates t`o animprovement on the method of hanging swords, for which Letters Patent were granted to J. Ball on the second day of November, 1858.
The invention consists in securing the plate in which the scabbard is held to the belt by means of a chain .so as to make a flexible attachment, which does away with all the straps used to hang officers swords, it being as simple as the frog attachment which is generally used to attach fancy swords, for freemasons and other uses, to the belts. u
By attaching either the scabbard directly or the aforesaid beltplate to the lower end of a leather frog or short strap which slides onthe belt, the attachment is not iiexible enough, and the sword often annoys the wearer when he is marching or seated. But when the aforesaid chain is` used in place of the frog the attachment will beiexible, and thesw'ord Will-be easier managed. In the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of this invention, lthe improvements are fully illustrated.
A is a. common .'belt provided with two rings, a a. The `sash or belt-platc l1 is also provided with-two (more or less) rings c c, and achain, B, passes through'tvhe latter, its ends being secured in the rings a a by means of snap-hoo`ksy or otherwise. When the belt is not used the plate b is secured to the end of the sash, (worn by .fneemasons &c.,) and the chain is done away with.- This chainmay also be used with advantage where the I claiin as new, anddesire lto secure by Letters Patent- The chain B in combination with the plate b, for the purpose of suspending swords from belts,'substantia1ly as herein shown and described.
plate b is `hot used, the chain passing through one or more rings which are secured directly to the scabbnrd.
