Description

CHARLES FAAS, OF'NOHTLH ATTLHBOHO, MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Patent No. 81,354, ma August 25,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-CHAIN IlOOlIS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be' it known that I, CHARLES ITAAS, of North Attleboro, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Watch-Chains and Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and letters .of
reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, in 'which- I ,Figure 1 is a plan view of my hook when closed.
Figure 2 is a. plan view ofthe same-when opened.
Figure V3 is a. plan view of one of my links, showing the manner of its connection. f
This invention consists of a sliding band applied in connection with an. eye provided with a swivelling-hook, in such manner as to secure said hook in place when closed, and to be easily slipped back in order toopen the same, and applied in connection with a divided link in a similar manner, and for a similar purpose, as willhereinafter more fully appear.
`To enable those skilled in theart to make and use my invention, I now proceed to' describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters in the drawings refer to like parts.
A represents-an eye, of metal, suitable to the purpose., designed to be placed in the button-hole of the wearers vest, or other-garment. To one ofthe ends of said eye is nttachedby a swivel-joint one extremity of a hook, a'the other extremity of which fits into the other `end of the eye A. On the outside of the hook a is placed a sliding band, b, held by means of springs b ZJ, one in each side oi" the hook upon the Same. When the band bis laced in 'contact with the lower side of the e eA, a ro'ectino` art of the same enters within P .Y P J e P said band, thus preventing the hook7 a from rotating on its swivel-joint. The band b in this case binds the hook and the eye together, sons to form an unbroken link, the proper method of connecting thesc'parts when the eye is placed in a. button-hole. The band is held in this position by the springs b b', beyond whichit has p assed The springs L are released in this Vcase from the confinement of the band, and stand out from the sides of the hook a, the band being between their` ends and' the eye A.' If now the springs In be pressed inward, so as to Venable the band b to be slipped down en the hook a, the latter may be turned on its swivlelling-joint into the Aposition shown in iig. e, and the eye removed freni the button-hole.
In g. 3 is represented a. link, erforrned of one piece of metal, divided at d, the centre of one sid'e, the division being made for the purpose of inserting the connecting-links e. A sliding band, b, 'is placed 'upon the link,-nnd when slipped over the ehink d', completely covers it, preventing the escape of the connecting-links', and also adding to the beauty of the chain. v
It will be seen that my chain is manufactured without-sldering a highly import-ant result; The band I is held upon the link by the connecting-links e.
Having thus fully described, my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- -1. The eye =A, in combination with the swivelling hook a, vthe 4sliding band Z), and the springs b b', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The divided link c, ineoinbination with the band Z1, substantially as described.
CHARLES FAAS.
