M ATILDA CAROLINE ROONEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BED:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed February 15 1906. Serial No. 301.124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATILDA CAROLINE RooNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the. county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to beds; and the object thereof is to provide an ordinary bed with side guards whereby an infant or infants 'will be prevented from rolling out or crawling out of the bed while asleep, a further object being to provide a bed with side guards which are detachably connected therewith in the manner of hinged doors and which may be opened and closed whenever desired and which may also be easily and conveniently removed from the bed or connected therewith.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed provided with my improvement Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 a side view of one of the corner-posts of the bed-frame.
In the drawings forming part of this speci fication I have shown in Fig. 1 an ordinary bed the frame of which is provided with the usual corner-posts a, and in the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide guard members I), which are hinged to the head corner-posts a, so that they will turn thereon in the manner of doors, and the free ends of which are adapted to be held in parallel position over the side rails of the bed stead or frame by locking-clips c, pivotedto said side rails.
The means which I employ for connecting the guard members I) with the corner-posts of the bedstead or frame consists of sleeves f, composed of separate parts detachably connected, as shown in Fig. 2, and held together by a set-screw f and said sleeves are provided at one side with eye attachments f which in the form of construction shown are formed separately from and detachably connected with said sleeves, and the guard members b are provided at their ends with downwardly-directed hook members g, which are adapted to be passed through the eye attachments f as clearly shown in the drawings.
By means of this construction it will be seen that the guard members I) are detach- 6o ably hinged to the corner-posts of the bedstead or frame and may be detached there from, if desired, and also quickly and easily connected therewith whenever necessary, and said guard members in the form of construction shown extend about two-thirds the length of the bed, but may in practice be made of any desired length.
My improvement may be applied to beds of any kind or class and adapted for use either by infants alone or by grown people and infants, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bedstead or frame the head-posts of which are provided with side guards adapted to extend a predetermined distance along the sides of the bedstead or frame, said headposts bein provided with detachable collars to which t e side guards are hinged, and the side rails of the bedstead or frame being provided with pivoted catchesadapted to engage said side guards and hold them in operative position. A
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 5th day of February, 1906.
MATILDA CAROLINE ROONEY.
Witnesses PETER B. PETERsoN, LILLIAN PETERSON.
