To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED J. H. REID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henderson, in the county of Chester and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopies for Beds or Cots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements 1n canopies especially designed for attachment to cots or beds.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character having attaching means which may only be actuated by deflecting the supporting bows.

A secondary object is to provide a canopy which will present a neat appearance when in use and which may be readily folded for transportation or storage.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. at is a similar view showing the canopy in position for transportation or storage; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another form of my invention; Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 66 of Fig. 5 showing the manner of attaching the canopy to the bed; and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the position of the canopy when attached to the bed.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown a folding cot 1 provided with folding end sections 2 and longitudinal top supporting bars 3. It will be understood however, that my invention may be applied to beds or cots of different types.

Coming now more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, my improved canopy is shown as comprising two transversely curved side members 4 each of which comprises a side rail or bar 5, a peak bar 6 and a plurality of flexible bows 7 connecting said side and peak bars. Although the bows 7 may be connected at their opposite ends to the above mentioned bars, in any suitable manner, I preferably secure them to the outside of said bars by means of staples 8.

cured over the netting 9 at opposite ends of the peak bars 6 are hinges 10.

The under edges of the side rails 5 are provided with arcuate hooks 11 having their bills opening toward the outside of said rails. These hooks 11, when the device is ready for operation as seen in Fig. 3, are adapted to be inserted within eyes 12 carried by the side rails 3 ofthe cot 1 and owing to the disposition of the peak bars 6, the hinges 10 and the flexibility of the bows 7, said hooks will be securely held within said eyes.

The form so far described is especially adaptable for beds to be used by adults and this form may be provided with an operating knob or eye 13, disposed on the inside of one of the rails 5 by means of which a person sleeping under said canopy, may disen gage the hooks 11 on one side thereof from the eyes 12 on the same side of the bed and {)hus swing the entire canopy from over the Although the ends 14: of the canopy may be made of any suitable material, I preferably form them of properly ornamented gauze and secure them detachably, as by screw eyes 15, to the peak and side bars 6 and 5. The side bars 5 may also be provided with a detachable apron or ruflie 16. When it is desired to either transport the canopy or to store the same, the ends 14 and the apron 16 may be removed and the side members 4 then laid out flat as seen in Fig. 4.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to7 inclusive, I have shown a single peak bar 6 and side rails or bars 5 flexible bows 7 passing over said peak bar 6 and having their opposite ends securely fastened to the side rails 5. The lower sides of the rails 5 carry hooks 11 similar to the hooks 11 in the above described form but having their bills opening inwardly instead of outwardly as in the above case. This form is especially adapted for use in connection with babies cots, cribs or cradles and conse-' ouently no operating meansis necessary on the inside of the canopy. By grasping the side bars 5 however, from the outside of. the canopy, said bars may be twisted by springing the flexible bows 7a suitable amount to allow the hooks 11 to disengage the eyes 12 carried by the cot, crib or cradle. Although I may detachably connect the ends 14' and the aprons 16 to this form of canopy, I preferably secure them bytacks 15.
