To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Match-Scratcher, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a match-scratcher of simple, durable, and in expensive construction designed to be attached to the under surface of an apparelvest.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the device, whereby the objects con templated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Figure 1 shows a plan view of the metal blank from which the body portion of the match-scratcher is formed. Fig. 4 shows a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 shows an apparel-vest with my improved match-scratoher in position thereon.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference-numeral 10 to indicate the body portion of the match-scratcher, preferably made of sheet metal, substan tially rectangular in shape, its front face being formed with a roughened portion 11 at one side edge thereof. The central portion of the margin is bent inwardly to form the shoulder 12. The end portions of the body have their margins 13 doubled inwardly over the body portion, and formed on one of said end margins 13 is a lug 14, projecting in wardly toward the center of the body portion. The remaining side margin is indicated by the numeral 15 and .is doubled inwardly over the rear of the body portion, its ends beveled to fit the adjacent ends of the parts 13, and near one end is an inwardly-project ing lug 16 with one edge parallel with the adj acent edge of the part 14, and near the other end of the part 15 is an inwardly-projecting hook 17, formed integral therewith. 14 and 16 are designed to receive a pin 18 and to hold part of said pin firmly between them and the body portion 10. The

said pin 18 is formed with a straight body portion and with an end portion inclined at an acute angle relative to the pin, and it is this inclined end portion that is held by the

lugs

14 and 16. The device is also designed to be used for holding an advertising or identification card, which card is indicated by the numeral 19 and is shaped to be introduced between the margins 13 and the body portion and between the margin 15 and the body portion and to fit against the part 12. To introduce this card, I place its ends under the margins 13, and then slide it inwardly under the pin 18 and under the margin 15 until its edge has passed beyond the part 12, whereupon the said card is firmly held in position against movement in all directions and the pressure of the pin 18 upon the card prevents it from being accidentally withdrawn.

In use the operator passes the pin 18 through a portion of the inside layer of an apparel-vest, near the lower edge thereof, and then inserts the point of the pin 18 in the hook 17. In this way the match-scratcher is firmly held in position on the inside 01 the vest, where it is wholly concealed, and when the operator desires to use it he raises the adjacent portion of the vest to thereby eX- pose the roughened surface of the plate 10, which may then be used as a match-scratcher. The card on the under surface thereof is designed to receive advertising or identification matter.

The complete device, with the exception of the card, is formed of a single piece 01' sheet metal and a single iece of wire, and the construction is such t at the parts may be assembled quickly and easily without any eX- pensive machine or hand work or any accurate fitting of parts, and when assembled a strong and durable match-scratcher is provided. The card may be easily and quickly removed when desired and a new one substituted therefor.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is-

1. An improved match scratcher comprising a body portion formed complete of a single piece of sheet metal ,and having its outer face provided with a roughened surface, its end margins folded inwardly over its inner face, one of said end margins formed with an integral lug projecting inwardly toward the center of the body portion, one edge margin folded inwardly over the body portion and provided at one end with a lug having one edge parallel and adjacent to the edge of the aforesaid lug and having an integral hook formed near its other end, the other side margin of the body portion extended at right angles to the body portion and-away from the rough face thereof, a pin comprising a straight shank and a part arranged at an acute angle relative thereto, said latter part inserted under the said' lugs and held by said lugs against the body portion, the other end of the pin designed to engage the said hook.

2. An improved match scratcher comprising a body portion formed complete of a single-piece of sheet metal and havin its outer face provided with a roughened sur' ace, its end margins folded inwardly over its inner face, one of said end margins formed with an integral lug projecting inwardly toward the center of the body portion, one edge margin folded inwardly over the body portion and provided at one end with a lug having one edge parallel and adjacent to the edge of the aforesaid lug and having an integral hook formed near its other end, the other side margin of the body portion extended at right angles to the body portion and away from the rough face thereof, a pin comprising a straight shank and a part arranged at an acute angle relative thereto, said latter part inserted under the said lugs and held by said lugs against the body portion, the other end of the pin designed to engage the said hook and a card inserted under the end and one side margin of the body portion and under the pin with its edgeadjacent to the other side margin.
