SPINDLE-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1921.
Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,031.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR URBAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboygan, State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Spindle-File; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to spindle files and has for its object to provide a spindle file carried by a base and to provide in connection with said spindle file a rigid guard which has one of its ends disposed above the sharpened end of the spindle file in such a manner that durin the use of the file, or nonuse of the file, I01 instance when standing on a desk, the guard which is rigid will prevent accidental contact with the sharpened spindle, for instance when leaning over a desk. Also to provide a guard comprising a flanged member adapted to be secured to a base, said flanged member having rising upwardly thereby a plate, which plate is cutaway on its forward edge so as to divide a recess in which a portion of the bills or other articles being filed will be received, said cutaway portion forming a rigid guard disposed above the spindle point.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved file.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved file.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a base, which base may be provided with felt members 2, which engage a desk and support the base 1 spaced there-' from in such a manner that the base 1 will not scratch the desk, therefore the file may be used on a highly finished surface without injuring the same.
Rising upwardly from the base 1 is a plate 3, the lower end of said plate being provided with a flange 4: bent at right angles to the plate 1 and securedto the base by means of screws 5 which pass through the flange and into the base 1. The front edge of the plate 3 is cut away as at 6 so as to leave an arm 7 disposed substantially above the sharpened end 8, of the spindle 9. The lower end of the spindle is secured in any suitable manner in socket 10 carried by the flange 4:. Socket 10 may be formed by stamping or pressing the boss 11 from the flange 4: thereby reducing the cost to a minlmum.
From the above it will be seen that a file of the spindle type is provided with a rigid guard, which will prevent accidental impalement when the file is disposed on a desk. The great difficulty and objection to the use of files of this character has been their danger to those using the same and also the danger to persons doing various kinds of work around the exposed file. However this danger has been obviated by providing the rigid guard disposed above the file point and in such a manner that when strain is put on the same incident to leaning over the file the guard will not buckle or bend.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A file comprising a base, a spindle guard plate carried by the base, aright angle integral flange carried by said plate and secured to the base, said flange having an upwardly struck annular flange adjacent its forward end, a spindle file having its lower end secured within the annular flange of the base and rising upwardly from said flange,
the front edge of the guard plate being cut awayso as to provide a rigid guard member disposed substantially above the upper end of the spindle file, said cutaway portion .also providing space whereby papers being filed may be received by the file spindle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR URBAN
