Description

WILLIAM F. ROWELL, OF SALEM DEPOT,
NEW HAMPSHIRE.
ATTACHMENT FOR SQUARES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907'.
Application ned my 12, 1906. serial No. 325.874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. RowELL, citizen of the Salem Depot, in the county of Rockingham, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, Clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to squares, and more particularly to attachments therefor, and has for its object to provide an attachment by the use of which a square may be converted into a Another object is to provide an attachment which will be extremely simple and which may be produced at a low figure.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specillcation and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view of a square provided with the present invention, the square being shown in top plan. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention detached and showing the upper side of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the attachment and square, taken online 3 3 of Fig. 1.. Fig. 4 is a section taken longitudinally of the band on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a metallic square 5 of the usual type in which both arms are of the same thickness, one arm being provided with the present invention, which consists of a metallic plate 5', disposed upon the arm of the square and having an edge portion turned downwardly over one edge of the square, as shown at 6, and then outwardly to form a flange 7, lying with its under face flush with the under surface of the square, and this flange is provided with a longitudinal series of notches S in its free edge. At one end the portion 6 and the flange 7 are cut away, as shown at 9, and a linger 10, equal in width to the cut- United States, residing at l away portion, extends from the plate 5 at the opposite side from this cut-away portion. At the opposite end ofthe plate from the cutaway portion 9 the flange 7 is cut into from its free edge, as shown at 11, and the portion beyond this cut is turned under to form a lip 12, which engages the under surface of the square.
A continuous vided and is and with the end portion of the plate 5, at which the cut-away portion 9 is located, one end of this band lying in the cut-away portion and the band receiving the finger 10 therewithin. The plate 5 has an opening 14, which registers with an opening 15, formed in the upper portion of the band 13, and a set-screw 16 is engaged in these openings and bears against the square-arm to hold the attachment against movement thereupon. The band 13 consists of upper and lower portions A and B and connecting end portions C, and the band is formed of a metallic strip overlapped at its end portions and secured together at said overlapping portions, these overlapping portions extending throughout the entire length of the lower portion B, so that this lower portion is given considerable thickness. It is in the upper portion A that the opening 15 is formed. In use the square is disposed upon the board to be marked with confining-band 13 is prothe lower portion B of the band 13 againstA the working edge of the board, and a pencil or other marker may be engaged in one of the notches 8 to mark the board when the square is moved thereupon.
What is claimed isq 1. The combination with a square, of a plate disposed thereupon and having a flange extending beyond the edge of the square and provided with marker-receiving openings, a lip carried by the plate and extending beneath the square, an attaching-band engaged with the square and plate and extendin beyond the under surface ofthe square to orm a guide, and means carried by the band for holding it and the plate against movement upon the square.
2. An attachment for squares comprising a plate having an edge portion bent at right angles thereto and then outwardly to form a flange, said flange being provided with a engaged with the square-arm IOO marker-:receiving opening, the plate and extending do from and then therebeneath, a band With the plate and adapted to receive a@ square-arm therewithin, said band and plate l having registering openings therein, and a a hp carried by WnWaidly thereset-sereW engaged in the openings.
engaged 1 t In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
