Application filed July 21, 1908. Serial No. 444,686.
To all whom it may con cem:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. VinTUE, a citizen of the United. States, residing at State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rustic Squares, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to carpenters tools, and hasspecially in view a novel form of square especially adapted for accur ately' measuring and marking the lapped surfaces of what is known as rustic sidings or weather boards .for houses. 1
. With the'above and other objects inview' the invention contemplates a square, the head portion of which is provided with means for engaging with the top edge of a siding, strip, and thetongue of which is provided with a stepped-surface'which conforms to the,
head being provided with a measuring scale ateach side thereof.
It will be evidentthatin. the practical-an plication of the invention; changes may be ment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawing, in ,which--- Figure 1 is a plan view of the squ'are, 'Fig. 2 isa sectional view through a three-lap rustic siding strip, showing the square" applied thereto.. Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts; 1 In the practical example of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, the same has been shown as it appears-when measuring a three-lap strip, but it will of course be obvious that thesaine may be used in connection with strips containing more or less laps, theessential feature of the invention residing in the head 1 and integral ferent planes, one surface of said head having each longitudinal edge provided with a measuring scale I, which is divided into inches and fractions thereof.
Preferably the tool is formed of sheet metal so as to enable thesanre to be stamped orotherwise formed from one piece of material, to provide an, integral head and onfue 2. The longitudinal bottom edge of t re head 1] from its .jhnction with the said standing flanges; which, as shown Fig.- 2 of the, drawings engage with" the. top edgeare in iflerent planes.
easurmg' lapped strips,
4 of the lapped m-ii) 5. Thelongit-udinal edges of the tongue are provided, with a measuring scale 6, which is also divided into inches and fractions thereof, and the said lapped strip 5.
It will be understood'that the strip shown in the accompanying-drawings is a conventional one, such-as is used for sidingsor weatherboards for houses, and the. same is generally furnished in the formof two or three laps to each strip. And in order to accurately measure the same with the old type of square, it was heretofore necessary to bend the tool to conform to the stepped or lapped surface. This bending of the tool resulted in the same being destroyed in a short while. With the )resent invention, the tongue is formed to t around the top surface of each of the raised portions of the strip, with the result that it'is possible to obtain the'necessary measurement f ings and sawing accurately.
4 A distinctive feature of the invention, in
.60 tongue is provided with 'a' plurality of" or markaddition to the form of tongue, is in the hold- '1. A tool for measuring and inarkin lapped strips, comprising a head provide with holding flanges, and a tongue provided with a plurality of connected portions which 2. A tool for comprising a head provided with a measurrn scale, holding flanges carried by said head, and a tongue integral with said head and provided with a plurality of connected ortions which' are in different longitu rnal planes. h
3. A tool fonmeasuring lapped strips, comprising a head provided with holding 'fianges, and a tongue. provided with a plurality of surfaces which are in different planes, and a sh'oulderconn'ecting each two of-said surfaces .ofthe tongue.
1 -4.' A""tool for measuring lapped strips comprising ahead provided with,..holdin2 flanges, a tongue integral with said head and portions which are in different planes and 10 I provided with .a plurality of connected suriaving a shouldered connection forming lap aces which are arranged in different planes. en aging flanges.
5. A tool for measuring lapped strips ntestimony whereof,Iaflix my signaturecomprising a head provided with holding in presence of two Witnesses. flanges, measuring scales on said head, a FRANK-A. VIRTUE. tongue integral with said head and also pro- Witnesses: Y vided with edge measuring scales, said KARL BERYLOFF,
. tongue being provided with a plurality of E. W. LOYD.
