To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS S. SoBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at McLoud, county of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma Territory, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Carpenters Rules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in attachment for carpenters rule, and has for its object to provide an attachment which may be attached to any ordinary rule, and thereby convert said rule into a gage, whereby a carpenter can mark a parallel line with the edge of a board for sawing the same.
With these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail,referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device in operation; Fig. 2, an end elevation of my device; Fig. 3, a front view of the same; Fig. fi, a plan view of the device; Fig. 5, a plan view of the rule showing the attachment upon the end of the same; Fig. 6, an edge view of the rule as shown in Fig. 5.
A represents any ordinary rule, upon the end of which is secured a plate B having an opening C formed therethrough beyond the end of the rule.
D is a block cut away from above, as represented at E, so as to make the block U-shape when viewed. from the front.
F is a pivot extending across from one side of the U- shaped block to the other, and upon this pivot is pivoted the clamp G which is in the form of a right-angle lever. This clamp G, is formed of a flat strip of metal having an end thereof bent to embrace the pivot F.
The rule A is designed to be passed through the block D below the lever, and when the lever G is pressed downward it will bind upon the rule and hold the block in any position set relative to said rule, therefore the lower end of the block D may travel in contact with the edge of the board, as shown in Fig. 1, and by inserting a pencil through the opening 0 at the end of the ruler a parallel line may be drawn with the edge of the board. By raising the lever C the rule can be adjusted so that the line may be marked at any distance from the edge.
G is a staple or eyelet secured in the block D and extending out therefrom to one side of the opening through which the rule passes.
In using the rule to describe a circle a point may be inserted through the staple into the board, and then by inserting a pencil through the opening 0 at the end of the rule and using the point passing through the staple as a center a circle may be described, and the size of said circle will depend upon the position of the block upon the rule.
The great advantage of my invention consists in the fact that the attachment may be carried in the pocket and easily and quickly attached to the rule when desired.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
In combination, :1 block having a recess in one of its edges, a pin extending across the opened end of the recess, a plate approximately L-shaped, the free end of the stem of the L being bent to embrace the pin, the foot of the L, extending to one side of the block and a rule positioned between the plate and the block to be clamped to the block by the plate.
