CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BOX-OPENER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed July 15, 1913. Serial No. 779,147.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR I. PLA'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Box-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to pro- -vide a strong and inexpensive pocket implement forged from a bar which shall be adapted for use as a hammer and a claw and which shall be provided near the claw end thereof with an inwardly and forwardly extending notch so shaped as to form a backwardly projecting horn especially adapted for use in tearing off the retaining bands of metal or wood which are used, to insure safety of the contents, upon large packing cases, and upon smaller boxes and cases as well where the contents are heavy orvaluable, and the greatest degree of strength and safety readily attainable is required.
With this and other objects in view I have devised the novel box opener which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating the use of my novel implement in tearing a retaining band from a box; Fig. 2 a plan view of the implement on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof.
While my novel implement is adapted for miscellaneous uses requiring a hammer and a claw it is especially designed for use in receiving and shipping rooms and places generally where boxes and packing cases are opened and closed, the requirements being for an implement that can be conveniently carried in the hip pocket and readily inserted and removed without catching upon the garment and which in addition to comprising a hammer and a claw for extracting nails shall combine therewith a horn especially adapted for engaging and tearing off the retaining bands upon boxes and packing cases, which cannot be conveniently accomplished by an ordinary nail extracting claw.
10 denotes the shank of my novel implement, 11 a double-headed hammer which is forged at one end of the shank at right shaped opening indicated by 13, the claw being preferably curved slightly, as shown in Fig. 3.
l4 denotes a backwardly projecting horn for loosening and tearing off the retaining bands of boxes and packing cases, as shown in Fig. 1. This horn is formed by forging a forwardly extending V-shaped notch in the edge of the shank back of the claw, said notch being beveled from the upper face of the shank to the lower face thereof, and forging the hornwith a blunt point in alinement with the lower face of the shank and in substantial alinement with the edge of the shank to adapt it to catch under and tear off the retaining band, which may'first be slightly loosened if necessary by the claw. The notch is necessary in order to enable the horn to be passed under the retaining band as it is required that the horn project but slightly from the line of the side of the implement, so that it will not catch upon the pocket of the user in inserting and renioving it.
In using the horn to remove a retaining band the horn is drawn under theband from the inner side and the side of the claw end. of the-implement is used as a fulcrum in prying off the band, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
An implement of the character described comprisin a shank having in its otherwise substantia ly continuous edge a forwardly inclined notch forming at its forward side an acute angle with said edge and providing a rearwardly inclined horn beveled on its inner side toward one face of the shank and ARTHUR I. PLATT.
