Letters Patent No. 80,577, dated August 4,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-WIOK TBIMMERS.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
' Be it known that I, DANIEL WARNER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State ofMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Clamp-Gauge or Device to be Used for Facilitating the Trimming" of the Wick of a L ampgand I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and repre-' sented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure lisa side elevation,
Figure 2 an edge elevation,
Figure 3 a top view,
Figure 4 a. bottom view, end
Figure 5 a transverse and vertical section ofjt'.
It consists of a flat tube, A, slit down through, and at its opposite edges, for some distance from its top, as shown at ayand having applied to each of the branches orparts b b, on opposite sides of the slits a' a, a flange or guard, c, to extend from the upper end of each branch, in manner as represented in the drawings. The upper portions 6 b constitute elastic or spring-jaws.
In order to use the article for the purpose for which it is intended, it is 'to he slipped. on the wick-tube of the lamp whose wick may require trimming, the said wick-tube being introduced into the lower end of the article, andcaused to extend up into it a short distance. Next, the wick, by means of its elevator, is to be raised within the clamp-gauge, and so as to project a short distance above its top, after which itwmey be trimmed to the form of such top by a pair of scissors. The object of theilenges of the top is to prevent the scissors from cnttinginto the top of the tube; While cutting off the wick, such wick should be held firmly in place by pinching the gauge so as to contract its jaws uponthe wick.
By means of such device, a wick of a common flat-wick kerosene-burner may be trimmed with great ease and regularity.
I claim thc,clamp-gauge, as constructed of the flat tube slitted at its opposite edges, as set forth.
I also claim the combination and arrangement of either or both the flanges c c, with the flat tube slitted at its opposite edges as specified, the whole being for the purpose or purposes as explained.
