Description

@nimh tatts stwffif,
THOMAS H. B. SANDERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent lVo. 79,401, dated-fune 30, 1868.
ROGKING SWING.
tite Sagitta raamt in. iu itin Enters ,tentent :mt mating putt nt tte time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A
Beit known that I, THOMAS H. B. SANDERS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. longitudinal sectionalelevation of my new toy.
Figure 2 is an endview of the same in elevation.
Figure 3, a plan view of one of the seats.
Figure 4, a plan view'ot` the other seat.
The nature of my invention consists in the'coinbination of certain mechanical devices, by means of which I combine a rocker with a swing, and` in such a manner that this new toy can be used either as a rocker or as e swing, or as both, when built in suiiioiently large proportions. v
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
. and A are the sides of the frame of the rocker.. iThey are made of wood or metal, to suit, and in ariy of the ordinary shapes already in use and known.
S and S are the seats.
S B and S' B', thebacks of said seats. i
m and m' are small recesses cut into both ends of seat S.
F is the bottom of the rocker.
y and p' are two square lnortises cut into seat S.
d and d', two holes through said seat S.
z and e' are two uprig ts attached to the centre of A and A', and bending toward each other as they go up. Both their upper ends-bear atenon of dimensions to fit into mortisesp and p in seat S.
T T and T T' are stays, made of wood or rope or metal, holding e and z in proper vertical position.
X X and X X are wooden or metallic stays, holding the lower` end of each upright, z and s', respectively to each side, A and A', of the r`ocker.
'zu is a rope having its ends through and. fastened to holes tl and CZ in seat S.
I\Iow, when the toy is to be used as an ordinaryr rocker, the seats and their backs being set, as shown in black lines in iig. I, the two children will sit, as usual, in S and S', and the additional rigging will in nowise interfere. On the contrary, the stays T and T and T TI will afford the children a secure hold for their little hands, thus keeping a better 'balance while rocking. i
If they want to use the toy as a swing, then they will displace seat S and set it on the upper ends of the uprights, as shown in red lines in both figs. .1 and 2saidseat S' being firmly held there in proper place by the tenons in z and e {itting into the mortises p and pin said seat S. When the seat S' is in that position, the
rope w hangs down, and on it is set the seat S, so that each branch of ropelw tits into the cuts m and minto said seat S.
`The child then sitting on seat S, in its new position, can swing itself` with no trouble, as the rocking movement will help him along.
When the seats S and S have been removed from their original positions, the backs S B and S B' may be, at will, turned dat down by means of hinges, so as to `be out of the way of the feet. ofthe child while swinging, as shown in red lines in S in iig. 1,
The new toy above described is nothing vbut the combination of a swing with any size or shape ordinary rocker. It can be gotten up very cheap, although sutiiciently substantial tobe used without any danger to the children.
I do not claim having invented the rocker or the swing, but having fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,`isi i The arrangement of the uprights z and z, their stays T and T and X and X', movable seats S and S', their swinging backs S B and S' B', rope w, with a rocker, A A', of any size or shape, tho whole constructed and operated in themanner an'd for 4the purpose above set forth and described.
. THOS. H. B. SANDERS.
