IMPROVED BABY-JUMPER AND SWING.

`Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,1120, dated July 5, 1864.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, S. T. MCDOUGALL, of New York, in the county and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Baby-Jumper and Nursery-Swing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing baby-jumpers and nursery-swings in the form of frames, the outside frame supporting the inside one, which forms the swing, the seat, and bed. Attached to the frames are the necessary spring, guides, and levers to4 give the different motions, and also in the combination of the various parts hercinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct my baby-jumper and nurseryswing as shown at Figure l. A is a platform with feet or casters under it, as shown. B B are two uprights fastened into the platform A and connected at the top by the cross-piece (l. The uprights B B have slots D D near their tops. The upright B has a lever or treadle, E, attached to and passing through it near the platform. The said lever has a pin through it inside the upright, to prevent it getting out of place, and is jointed outside, so as to allow it to be folded up against the upright B when not in use. The cross-piece G has guide-holes F F through it, and attached to the bottom of the crosspiece is a spring, G. Attached to each end of the spring are hooks, as shown. Directly under the spring G is a cross-piece, H. Said` crosspiece has journals turned on each end. Said journals pass through the slots D D in the uprights B B. On the end of one journal is a lever, I. `0n the'top of the crosspece H are two guide-pins, J J, and two eyes, K K. On the center is a turning lever, L, with cords M M attached at each end, shown by dotted lines. Attached to the cross-piece H by means of a screw and nut is a frame composed of a bottom or seat, N, and two uprights, 0 O, and across-piece, P. Attached to the front of this frame isa movable table, Q, fastened by means of pins or hooks. This table attaches to the bottom or seat N by the same means as shown in dotted lines at R, and also shown at Q, Fig. 2. Attached to the bottom or seat N by means of hinges or pins is a back piece, S, Fig. 2. Said back piece is raised and lowered by means of the slotted piece T, and is held in position by thumbscrews. The dotted circle U can be attached to the cords M M when required, and forms a baby-walker. made of wood or metal, and opens in the oenter to allow a child to be placed into it, and is fastened together by hinges or pins and springs.

To use my invention as a baby-jumper, raise the cross-piece H with the frame and seat attached high enough to allow the hooks on the spring G to catch in the eyes K K. Motion can then be given to it by the lever E passing through the upright B and under the seat N, as shown in dotted lines.

When the child is old enough to use its feet,

it can make the necessary motion by allowing its feet to touch the platform A. The movable table q, when used as represented in Fig. l, is for the purpose of holding the childs playthings and to prevent it falling off its seat.

When used as represented in Fig. 2, 1t forms a bed or cradle. 'The guide-pins J J prevent any swinging motion when used as a baby-jumper.

When used as a swing, unhook the crosspiece H from the spring and allow it to rest on the journal. Swinging motion can then be given to the seat by means of the levenI or the cords M M. The ordinary rocking motion of the cradle can be given to the seat or bed by turning it partly around, as represented in Fig. 2. When used as a babywalker, the seat and frame can'be removed, if necessary, and the ring attached to the cords M M or to the spring Gr. The lever L can be used under the crosspiece H, as well as on top ot' it, and can be turned out of the way when not in use, as shown.
