Description

lHENRY HURSILSEN., OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
' Letters Patent No. 89,317, dated APM-l 27, 1869.
IMPROVED BOOKING-CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY HURSH, Seu., of Mansfield, in the county of Richland, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, andv to the letters of reference marked thereon, of which drawings- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved rockingchair.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the extending of the rocker of a rocking-chair up to nearly the top of the chair-back, in such a manner as to form a rocking-chair having a much greater compass of motion than the common rocking-chair, and which is free from any danger of rocking over, which is a common difficulty with other rocking-chairs.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construcbottoms of the posts A K, A K, and extend around and up to the posts A A, near the tops of the same, where they are secured by screws, or in any other suitable manner.
The shape of -these rockers is that of a compound curve, the first portion, B, (extending from el to e, or between the bottoms of the legs or posts A K,) being curved to a circle, having its centre at a, which point is about where the centre of gravity of' the chair and occupant would be when the chair was in a nearly erect position.
The second part, C, of the rocker (extending from e to f,) is curved to a circle, having its centre at b, which point is somewhat above the centre of gravity of chair and occupant, when in a reclining position, while 'the third part, D, (extending from f up to the post A,) is curved to a circle, having its centre at c, which point is somewhat below the centre of vgravity of chair and occupant, when the chair is rocked back until the top of the back touches the floor. y
It is readily seen, from this desoriptiom, that the occupant of this chair may rock back until the top of the chair-back touches the door, and that he cannot possibly rock over, as in other rocking-chairs, and further, that this chair has two sitting-curves to its rockers, the irst o1' sitting-curve B allowing a condition of neutral equilibrium to the chair and occupant, when in nearly an erect position; the second or reclining-curve C allowing a condition of stable equiibrium to chair and occupant, in a reclining position; the closing or rolling'c'urve D serving to complete the rocker, and from the position of its centre of curvature, to allow of the easy rocking of the chair through its whole compass of motion.
The length of the reclining-curve C can be varied to suit the amount of range required inthe recumbent positions of the chair.
Having thus fully' described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rocking-chair, constructed with rockers extending from the bottom of the front chair-legs, .under the bottom of the rear chair-legs, up to or nearly to the top of the chair-back, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing, I have here-v unto set my hand, in presence of two witnesses, this 20th day of February, A. D. 1869.
