Description

'B. M. DARLING. SEAT FOR CHAIRS, (mas, &c.
No. 86,141; PatentedJan. 26, 1869.
i figment fim.
BENJAMIN M. DARLING, OF WOONSOCKE-T, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 86,141,.dated J a/nua/ry 26, 1869; animated J mummy 11, 1869.
IIIPROVED SEAT FOR CHAIRS, CARS, &c.
the Schedule referred to in the Letters Patent and making part of the limo.
To all whom it may concemi:
Be itlknown that I, BENJAMIN M. DARLING, of Wocnsocket, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Iinprovement in Seats for Chairs, Sars, 8.0.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a-full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists: in a novel, construction of a chair, car, or other seat, in combination withthe frame on which it is supported, whereby the seat is rendered movable thereon, without becoming detached, and susceptible of adjustment, either in a more pr less inclined plane with reference to the frame on which it rests or is' supported.
In'thc accompanying plate of drawings my improvement inseats for chairs, cars, 850., is i11ust1ated Figure 1 being a' perspective view of a chair having its seat and supporting-frame constructed according thereto; I p
. FigureZ, a plan view of the under side to a chair- Beet; m di a Figure 3, a vertical section, taken in the plane of the line a; x, fig. 1.
' A, in the drawings, represents the supporting frame-4 work to a chair, consisting of legs B, joined together byrounds'O at suitable points.
1 D, the seat, having a continuous rail, E, supported by. upright posts or rounds, F, at suitable points.
This rail'E forms a rest for the back and the arms 'of the person sitting in the chair.
To the under side of the chair-seat two ribs, G, are applied or attached, extending from front to rear in parallel lines These'ribs, upon their under sides H, are made of a convex circular or, arc-shape, and by such sides {rest and bear upon similar concave circular or arc-shape .time, however, ofieiing no obstruction to the free motion of the seat over the concave bars or ribs I from front to rear.
From the above description of the combined con-- struction of the chair-frame A, and its seat B, it is ob,-
may be desired by theperson seated therein, to produce the necessary comfort and ease.
And it may be here observed that, if so desired, a fOOtr-I'CSt may be arranged in connection withthe seat, so as to have a. corresponding motion therewith,
, And,-furthermore, that although I have described my invention more particularly in connection with chairseats, it may be applied as well to car and other seats; and therefore I do not intend to limit myself in its use to any .one particular form or kind of seat.
Having thus described my improvement,
' What I claim as my invention, is--- The convex ribs G, applied to seatD, and provided with a. cross-bar, J, in-combination with the concave ribs or bars I,'fixed to supporting-frame A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
