Description

D. WITT ROCKING CHAIR.
No. 68,021. Pai' entedAug; 20 1867.
DANIEL WIT-T, OF EUBBARDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
zemr pamnlvo. 68,021, dated 1111 118120, 1867.-
' I mrnovrzn Rooms-01mm TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it Known that I, Datum. WITT, of Hubburdston, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massech usetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocking-Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a .full, clear, and exact description thereof, which 'will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents .a vertical section of my improved rockingchair taken in the line xix, fig t Figure2 is a rear view of the same.
Similar letters'of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention rclates to a new and useful improvementin the construction of rocking-chairs, and consists in mounting the sent upon a. stationary frame or set of legs instead of rockers, and suspending it on central pivots to have an oscillating motion, which is regulated by spiral springs under the front and rear of the seat;
:lndnlso suspending theback of thcchair upon pivots 'fmraising and lowering to udj'nst it at difi'erent angles of inclination, in which it is held by spring-dogs working in segment-racks. By this arrangement of the seat,-
suspended on pivots and supported by spiral springs, the oscillntion is very easy and pleasant, and long. projecting rockcrsare dispcnsedyvith.
A rectnngulcr supporting frmnc or base, A, is provided with legs at the four corners, the rear legs a 0 extending out further '-than the front legs a a. The seat B has strong metal side pieces, b b, secure|l to it centrally, the lower-ends of which side pieces are pivoted on theframe A to allow theseat to oscillate forward and backward. Under the middle of the front and rear of the seat B are placed long and poive-rful spiral;
springs,-rr tithe lower ends of which are secured upon a. centre cross-rail, d, of the frumeA. When the seat B is moved back and forth upon its pivots, the spiral springs cc will support it equally, and by their nation and reaction will secure an easy rocking or oscillating motion, very agreeable for n person sitting in the chair. ".lhe hack 0 is pivoted upon opposite sides of the seat to segment-racks e e, and spring-dogs gy are attached to it. in such a manner t-hat they will catch in the rack and hold the seat at any desired angle of inclination, as shown clearly in fig. 1, so that the back may be adjusted to allow the person to recline more or less, as desired," f2
comfort or convenience. The seatmay be made stationary by shifting ablock, It, under the back part by mean.
ot'o leve'r,'k, thus readily converting the chair into a lounge;
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secnre by Letters Patent- 1.".lhe' arrangement of the seat 13, the side pieces b6 pivoted on the base A, and the spiral springs or c.- to
give the seat a regular rocking or oscillating motion, substantially as herein described.
2. The segment-racks c and spring-dogs gg, in combination with the back 0, seat B, shifting-lever 7:, end
hlock 72, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
The shifting-lever I: end block It, in combination with the seat B, arranged and operating as and for the purposes specified.
= The above specification of my inventionsigned by me this 5th day of June, 1867.
'- e DANIEL WITT.
