Description

A. H. ORDWAY.
Improvement in Rocking-Springs for Cradles, Chairs, &c.
Patented July 9,1872.
AM. PHDTU -ITIIOGRAPXIC ca M): ('05 sum 5's Mom 5.}
UNITED STATES FIGE.
ALBERT H. ORDWAY, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,746, dated J iily 9, 1872.
I, ALBERT H. ORDWAY, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Rocking-Springs adaptable to Cradles, Rocking-Chairs, Carriage-Seats, 850., of which the following is a specification:
' Nature and O bjects of the Invention.
are secured to the bottom of the cradle, chair,
or seat for which they are intended. One or more pairs of springs may be used, according to the size and weight of the object for which they are intended to serve as rockers.
On the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement as applied to a cradle, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawing. I
a a is a suitable frame work, connected together by means of a brace, b, or its equivalents, as shown. 0 is the bottom of the cradle, to which are secured the braces d d in the usual way. A pair of metallic springs, e e, is attached with their upper ends f f to the brace d or its equivalent, and to the frame a with its lower ends 9 g, in a suitable manner, by means of screws or similar arrangement, as may be'convenient. The springs e e are bent in a semicircular shape, or nearly so, as shown, and are attached together by means of the clamp h, or its equivalent, at the place where they touch each other, as shown in Fig. 2.
The springs e e are originally straight, but by attaching them to each other and to the braces a 01 they areconfined to a semicircular form, or nearly so, as shown, by which arrangement great elasticity and durability are attained in the operation of said spring. On the drawing two pairs of springs e e are shown; but one or more pairs may also be used, according to the size of the object for which they are intended.
The advantages over other springs orrockers are, that I am able to obtain a very easy and agreeable motion for the cradle, &c., and that the springs can be operated with a very slight power, and they will continue in motion forward and backward longer than other springs or rockers after the rocking power ceases. When applied to a cradle the springs may be operated easily by the operator by pressing his or her foot on the lower curve of any of the springs e e where it is attached to the frame-work a or the cradle may be rocked by operating the upper part of it in the ordinary way, if desired. The springs c e are shown flat in the drawing; but they may also be made of any other suitable sectional form, if desirable.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I
wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In combination with the frame a and the sides or bottom of a cradle, chair, &c., the semicircular springs e 6, when each pair of springs is made in two distinct pieces and connected together by means of the clamp or brace h, for the purpose and in a manner as shown and described.
ALBERT H. ORDWAY. Witnesses: ALBAN ANnRnN, E. E. TORREY.
