IMPROVEMENT VIN RAILWAY-.CAR SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters `Patent No. 47,842, dated April 18, 1865.
To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. SAYRE, of Pisgah, Butler county, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railwayar Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
Figure l shows the ordinary position of the seat or chair, and Fig. 2 its inclination. Fig. 3 shows the fiat spring underneath; Fig. 4, the Hat bar with its upright ends.
The nature of my invention consists in an adjustable swinging and revolving chair, opera-ted by the arrangement, construction, and combination of upright posts and notched lever at the sides, and an adjustable flat spring underneath.
The object of my invention is to allow the sitter to incline the back of the chair most comfortable to the position he may require, or to move or turn round as far as he may desire, or to rock himself if he pleases.
A is the seat and back of the chair, made any required shape most comfortable for a traveling, sleeping, or rocking chair. B is the upright center iron post with stays C on each side, the stays having foot-rests D attached. A cross tlat bar, E, of iron, rests upon the post B. This bar has forked upright ends G that are attached to the` center of the chair-arms by a pivot, H, upon which J is a fiat spring the cha-ir swings or rocks. underneath the seat, and `is fastened at its center to the top of the stays C. The center post, B, passes through the center of this Het spring J, and the spring has an aperture, K, at each end, in which a projecting pin, L, (on the bar E) tits, and when the sitter desires to turn round, he presses down the end o f the spring J, and frees the pin L, and moves his chair around to either side.
A curved lever, M, is attached to the side 'ot' the seat (near the front) by a pivot, N. It
has notches or teeth P on the under side that catch upon the flat bar E, so as to hold the chair in its upright position, or by raising the end of the lever and lowering it again to another notch the back of ch air inclines accordin gly, to suit the comfort of the traveler.
It represents a section of a railwaycar.
What I claim as my invention, and4 desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement, construction, and combif nation of the upright ends G of the bar E, notched lever M, and adjustable fiat spring J, as herein described, and ifor the purposes set forth.
GEORGE W. SAYBE.
