Letters Patent No. 92,964, dated July 27, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGES- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J 01m 0. HAM, of the city and county .of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Carriage; and I do'-- hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is the side of a carriage, to which my improvementhas been attached.
Figure '2 is a topview of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Figure dis a detail sectional view of the front of the carriage-body. v
.Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the'construction of the front part of the bodies of carriages, so as to make them more convenient and comfortable for those riding in them, at the same time that their beauty and elegance are greatly increased; and
It consists in making the front part of the carriage in circular-form, and, in extending the top or cover of the body over the drivers seat, as hereinafter more fully described.
I The main part, A, ofthe body of the carriage, is made in the ordinary manner. The lowerpart of the body, below the drivers seat is 'cut away to allow the fore wheels to pass benea 11 the said body in turnm lhe front part or end,;(], of the carriage-body, is made circular inform, andinay be madeof glass or wood, and maybe permanently or detachably connected with the main part, A, of the carriage-body, If desired, the said circular part, or front, 0, may be made in sections to slide over each other, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The circular front 0 may be made upon the arc of 'such. a circle, as to be an exact semicircle, or it may be nadeupon the arc of acircle of greater or less diameter, so as to be an are greater or less than a semicircle, as may be desired, or the curve may vary from the arc of a true circle in either direction, as the taste of the builder or designer may dictate.
If desired, the projecting iront 0 may be made in the form of a section of a polygon, but I prefer the construction first described.
When the dlivers seat, B, is made upon the same level as the other seats of the carriage, the top or cover I) may be extended in front, as shown in fig. 1, so as to fully or partially cover the drivers seat B.
In case the drivers seat is designed to be at a greater or less elevation than the other seats of the carriage, the projecting part of the top or cover D ma be omitted or cut off, for convenience in arranging the drivers seat.
Having thus described my invention, 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The top D and seat B, extended in line with each other, in combination with the curved front 0, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
