To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS IiAIsLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in

the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Tobacco, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to boxes forv tobacco, snuff, &c.; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character in which the contents of the box are preserved in a moist condition.

The invention consists of the arrangement and organization of parts, as hereinafter described and then pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an exemplification of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with my invention with the top open to show the interior arrangement of the parts. Fig. 2 is a View in central crosssection of the device shown in Fig. 1, but with the top closed. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the tray. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the corner of the body of the box, showing the construction of the seat employed for the supporting-ears of the tray. Fig. 5 is a view in longitudinal section, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the construction of a modified form.

In the drawings the reference-letter A indicates the body of the box, which is composed of side and end walls and a suitable bottom wall in the form of an open-topped receptacle, it being understood that the body may be of any suitable size and shape.

A suitable top B is hinged to the body in any convenient manner, and in the construction shown in Fig. 1 the rear side wall of the body is curved or bent in a rounded form to provide bearings a for the pintle b. The rear edge of the top is provided with corresponding bearings b, which engage the pintle in order to provide a hinge connection for the top and body, the bearings a projecting slightly within the area of the body in order to form overhanging ribs, for a purpose to be described. The front and side walls of the body the body in order to provide an intermediate space for the reception of an absorbent pad w. The bottom of the. tray is provided with perforations c in order to allow the contents of the tray to be affected by the moisture of the pad. If desired, the body may be provided with a suitable aperture o by means of which the absorbent pad a may be moistened without removing the tray from the body. The aperture a may be provided with a suitable closure of any desired construction, such as the plate a, pivoted upon the interior of the body and provided with a suitable latch 11), projecting within the aperture (1/ by which the closing-plate may be operated and its movements limited. The tray C is provided on its sides with ears or wings a, which are adapted to rest in seats a in the ribs (1/ of the ends of the body of the box.

The front and rear walls 0 and 0, respectively, of the tray are of less height than its end walls 0" and are attached to the tray at their lower edges only or otherwise constructed so as to have aslight spring action. With this construction when the tray is inserted in the body of the box the ears 0' rest upon the seats a in the ends of the body and the front and rear walls 0 and c of the tray snap under the bearings (a and the front rib a, respectively, so that the tray is securely held within the body of the box against accidental displacement. In order to remove the tray, a knife-blade or other suitable implement may be inserted through the aperture a to lift the tray out of the body, or the front wall of the tray may be sprung back by inserting the knife-blade between the front walls of the tray and body by means of a small recess 0 in the front wall of the tray.

The top B is provided with a holder Z) for an absorbent pad y. The holder may be of any suitable form for this purpose, and it is removably held within the top in any suitable manner. In the construction shown the top B is provided with downwardly-projecting flanges 6 extending along its front and side edges within the area of the body, and the bearings b of the top project inwardly toward the center of the box to provide a suitable recess to receive a web 12*, extending along the inner edge of the holder, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The relation of the parts of the holder and top are such that when the web If is seated behind the bearings b the front edge of the holder engages frictionally with the front flange Z2 of the top, whereby the holder is retained in place against accidental displacement. The holder is provided with suitable perforations 6", whereby the contents of the box are kept moist by the pad.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 6 the bottom of the body is offset inwardly, as at a, to provide a recess to receive a pad-holder b and is perforated, as shown. The edge of the body provides a seat a to receive the web 6* of the holder, and the opposite edge of the holder frictionally engages with the opposite side a of the recess.

Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a box having a body provided with inwardly-projecting ribs, and a tray supported on the wall of the body and of less depth than the body and having spring portions adapted to take under said ribs.

2. In a device of the class described, a box having a body provided with front and rear ribs, and a trayhaving end pieces supported by the ends of the body and having spring sides adapted to take under said ribs.

3. In a device of the class described, a box having a body provided with inwardly-projecting front and rear ribs, seats in the ends of the body, a tray having end wings adapted to said seats and spring sides adapted to take under said ribs, and a top having a removable pad-holder.

4:. In a device of the class described, a pad- .holder having a web, in combination with a support having a recess to receive the web and a flange to engage the holder.
