THEODORE J. SEEBACHER AND FERDINAND L. SEEBACHER, OF
PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-oOvEFz-ING..r
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,583, dated February 14, 1905.
Application led September 3, 1904. Serial No. 223,266.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, THEoDoRE J. SEE- BACHER and FERDINAND L. SEEBACHER. citizens of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, Mitts, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to gloves, mitts, and the like, and more vparticularly to that class which are used by engineers, motormen, and laborers; and the object of this invention is to provide a mitt which is adapted to be secured upon the hand of the wearer and is so constructed that the same will protect the hand from injury While manipulating levers or handling heavy articles.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mitt of the above-described character which will be-eXtremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and highly eflcient for the many purposes for which it canbe used.
Brieiiy described, our improved mitt is constructed upon lines similar to the sandal, the mitt being stamped or cut from a light flexible material, such as leather, and the mitt comprises a body portion which is adapted to be of a sufficient size to protect the inside of the hand, and it is provided with an opening through which the thumb-protrudes. Secured to the body portion oi' the mitt by suitable means is a thumb-protecting piece which is adapted to protect the inner side of the thumb,
and this piece is provided with a strap upon its back which will engage the thumb and when the mitt is secured upon the hand will prevent the thumb-piece from becoming disengaged from the thumb. The mitt is held upon the hand by a strap which passes over the lingers and holds the body portion in engagement with said fingers, While a strap and buckle is employed to secure the rnitt upon the'hand, the strap passing over the back of the hand and made adjustable to fasten the mitt firmly upon the hand.
All of the above construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim, and referring to the drawings accompanying this application like numerals of reference designate similar parts in the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wearing side of the mitt, 'showing the same applied to a hand; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the mitt, partly in perspective.
The mitt as constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly adapted for motormen and engineers, and it is adapted to protect the hand of the wearer when 'manipulating the controller and brake-handle of streetcars or the levers and wheels of motor-cars, although the mitt may be readily used by laborers to shield the hand when handling heavy articles.
In carrying our invention into effect we construct our improved mitt of an oval piece of liexible material, such as leather, the reference-numeral 1 designating the body portion of the mitt. It is stamped or cut from a piece of leather, and in so stamping or cutting the mitt we provide near the upper ends thereof lips 2' 2 and near the lower end of the mitt lips 3 and 4, the lip 4 being considerably larger than the lip 3,and this lip is cut away,as designated at 5, to permit the thumb of the hand to protrude therethrough. The lips 2 2 are connectedtogether by a strap 6, the ends of the strap being securedV to the lips 2 2 by the rivets 7 7 Secured to the lip 4 by a rivet 8 is rear side of the thumb-piece and near the end thereof is secured a strap 17 by rivets 1818, this strap being secured to the thumb-piece in such a manner that the thumb of the person wearing the same can be inserted between the strap 17 and the thumb-piece, said strap belingers under the strap 6 and by placing the ing employed to prevent the thum b-piece from becoming disengaged from the thumb. The mitt is placed upon the hand by passing the.
thumb in the opening' 5 and between the thumbpiece and the strap, at which time the end of the strap 12 is placed in the buckle and drawn across the back of the hand to irmly secure the mitt upon the hand.
In constructing our mitt we have cut. the same whereby it will conform to the shape of the hand and protect the hand andprevent the same from becoming callous or injured, and we form the mitt of a flexible material, whereby it willconform to the different positions that the handand thumb may assume.
While we have herein shown the preferred form of constructing our improved mitt it is obvious that we do not care to limit ourselves to this exact construction, but may so vary the Contour of the mitt and the general arrangement of the straps and thumb-piece as will be permissible by the scope of the appended claim.
Having fully described our invention, what l we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A mitt of the character described comprising a body portion having two lips on its opposite edges near its upper end, a strap riveted to said lips, two other lips on the opposite edges of the body near the lower end of the same, one of said last-named lips being larger than the other, a strap riveted to the ends of each of the last-named lips, one of said straps carrying a buckle, and the other of said straps being provided with holes, the larger of said last-named lips being formed with a thumb-opening, a thumb-piece riveted to the body portion and passing through the thumb-opening, and a strap riveted to the said thumb-piece. y
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
