IMrEovED. BED-BOTTOM.

ro ALL wHoM 1r MAEl ooNcEEN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CHAMBERLIN, of Alexander, in the county of Genesee, and State of New `York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; .and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- `Figure I is a longitudinal vertical s ectionoi` a. bedstcadprovided with my improved bottom. Figure II is a plan thereof. i I y i V Like lettersof reference designate corresponding part-s in both iigures.
My invention consists, First, in the special combination and arrangement of -rubber springs, with supporting cross-pieces :md
-levers for sustaining the slats.
Second, in the peculiar manner of hinging theends ofthe levers to the saidcross-pieces.
In the drawings, A A represent theordinary wooden slatsof u bed-bottom. B B, levers, on the endsjoi' which the ends of .each slat rest. C C are two cross-pieces, secured in any suitable manner to the rails of the bedstead, to which'the ends of the levers B are hinged.
The cross-pieces C are formed with transverse recesses,cl d, in their upper surface, for`the reception of the ends of the levers, which are bevelled, vns shown at e. A hook-bolt, f, passes through the ends of each lever and the crossipiece, with a. keyfrod, g, of any suitable material, passing through the eyes of the said bolts, and
extending transversely across the bedstead and ends of the levers, while a nut, z', or other fastening on the.
under side of the crosspieces, firmly secures .the bolts and key-rod in place. This forms a cheap and reliable hinge for the levers. v i
Immediately back of the hinge, in a suitable socket in the recesses d, are arranged blocks of Indie. rubber,
s, or equivalent elasticA material, which operate .as ,springs when the levers are depressedl thereon by the pressure of the vslats on the ends of the levers, as 1s clearly represented in the drawings.
One or both `ends of the slats are formed with a 'longitudinal slot, m, with a screw fitting in the same, and screwing into the ends of the levers, with the heads of the screws countersunli lsh or slightly beneath the surface of the slats, to prevent their wearing the mattress. This mode of connection prevents the vertical as well as laterali displacement of the slats, while -the slot permits that longitudinal yielding of the ends of the slats, and play ofthe levers, necessary, and consequent to their elastic or springing action. v
The elastic fulcro., which therubber blocks form,by slightly yielding, producent the end of the relatively long arms oi 4the levers, the most arnp'le vertical play required.
The key-rod g, by pressing on theends of all the levers, forms a' single fastening, which holds the levers more steadily in place than could be 'accomplished by an independent. fastening for each. Another advantage s of this is', that in case any one of the bolts becomes loose, the extended key held by bolts adjacent the loosened one, will keep the vintermediate lever in place, and 'maintain it in eiiicient action.
What IelaimV as my invention, andtdsire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The hinged levers B B, supporting ross-pices C C, India-rubber blocks s s, and slats A A, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
` 2. Hinging the -ends of` the levers tothe cross-piece by means of hook or `eye-boltsf, and extended keyrod g, in the manner and forthe purpose shown and described.
'l v WM, A. GHAMBERLIN.
