IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BQTT OMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,096, dated April 13, 1875; application filed January 7, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MADISON B. OWENS and GEORGE OHAMBERLIN, of Olean, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of our improved spring bed-bottom, with a portion of the slat-frame broken away to exhibit the horizontally movable sprin Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the spring-tension-regulating blocks, and a perspective view of the same applied to the springs of the bed-bottom and Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a vertical section of our improved bedbottom, exhibiting the horizontally-movable spring.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in bed-bottoms; and it consists of springs united together in pairs, one above the other, at the sides of the bed-bottom, combined with a single one, so attached to the cross-piece connecting the foot-legs as to swing or move horizontally on its axis, and bearing upward against the cross-piece connecting the head ends of the upper ones of the side springs, with or without spring-tension-regulating blocks.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the side springs, arranged in pairs, one above the other, and united together at the center, with interposed blocks at their points of conjunction, to separate them, as shown in Fig. l at a. These springs are slightly bowed, and attached-the lower ones to the cross-pieces b 1), connecting the legs of the bed, by means of pins, or otherwise, which will permit them to be readily detached therefrom, and the upper ones to the lower edge of the cross-pieces c c, which support the slats (l d. The diagonal pieces 0 e, crossing eachother about the center, and fastened to the cross-pieces b b, rigidly hold the latter together. B is a single spring, attached to about the middle or center of the cross-piece b, at the foot end of the bed, so as to move or swing horizontally on its axis, and bearing upwardly against the cross-piece b at the head of the bed, the cross-pieces c 6 also forming a hearing for the said spring at about its center. In case of unequal pressure on the springs A A, the free end of the movable spring B is moved so as to cause the latter to compensate for such inequality of pressure, and thus equalize the pressure on the springs A A, and bring the bed-bottom to a horizontal plane. 0 is a block or device for regulating the tension of the side springs A A, having flanges c c, by which it is prevented from slipping from its place when inserted between the springs, as shown in Fig. Its sides, as also its ends, are beveled or inclined, as shown in Fig. 3, to adapt it for insertion in between the springs, either in an endwise or other position, in increasing or diminishing the tension of the springs.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The springs A A and pivoted spring B, in combination with the cross-pieces b I) and c c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we hereunto aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
MADISON B. OWENS. GEORGE OHAMBERLIN. \Vitnesses E. W. SrEPHENs, O. H. TEw.
